New U.S. TSA rules ban notebooks, Wi-Fi in final hour of flight

The New MacBook Air“The US Transportation Security Administration late Sunday implemented new rules that are likely to have far-reaching implications for technology on planes. The security measures will ban those on international flights entering the US from having any ‘personal belongings’ on their laps for the final hour of the flight, restricting notebooks and most other non-handheld devices. Access to carry-on bags is similarly restricted for the same period,” Electronista reports.

“They also preclude use of any communications or entertainment integrated with the plane itself for the final hour of the trip. The step not only restricts traditional services for passengers like phones and seat-mounted TV but also shuts down Wi-Fi services provided by carriers entering the US,” Electronista reports. “Strictly domestic flights aren’t affected by the restrictions.”

We must remember what “terror”ism is: an organized system of beliefs centered around the principle that making ordinary citizens think that the assumptions of everyday life have been disrupted, that they cannot be safe in even the most secured sites and experiences, will lead to political change. It’s silly to think that terrorists simply want to kill lots of people, and it explains why they will continue to attack any institution that seems to be safe — US airlines, and the Pentagon/Congress/the White House for al Qaeda. It also explains why the World Trade Center was repeatedly targeted–once it survived the initial attempt in 1993, it became an even more enticing target.

Unless we remember the symbolic nature of terrorism, we will be unable to decide how much and what types of freedom to give up in the name of securitization.

  2. So, what is it? Atheism or Islam? I’m confused… which one is the bad one now? Gee, I sure hope it’s not Christianity! No, Christians would never stand in the way of fairness, humanity, love, and peace, right? Oh, unless you’re gay and want to marry your partner, or you’re a doctor who happens to be pro-choice–you can be legitimately shot for that one in 48 of 50 states, right? What if you want to run for office, but you’re not Christian–will people vote for you in the good ol’ US of A?

Basically, the issue is power, not religion–any single group can go to extremes to obtain it… Look at the actions of the good ol’ US of A in the middle East in the last 50 years, and you might begin to see where the current struggle for power comes from.

MDN Word: “Keep,” as in, “Keep burying your head in the sand and the US of A will keep on looking like a great place to be!”

  3. @ RonMoney,

I find it so very interesting to witness the mental gymnastics that intellectual dwarfs like yourself will put themselves through in order to distract themselves from the obvious.

Now then, I have things to do today, and I have no more time to waste trying to save you from your dementia. So I’m gonna go now, and refer you again to my reading list. Specifically, I would recommend you begin with:

The Politically Incorrect Guide to the Koran

It helpfully draws direct contrasts between the Koran and the Bible. After reading that, you will have no excuse for your appalling ignorance.

After that, any of the other books would be a helpful continuation. And remember, you have to be, uh, “open minded”, since that’s the very thing people like you are always enjoining everyone else to be.

Have a nice day, everyone! I’m outta here. I know that stupid is not contagious, but it IS nauseating.

  4. Josh … you ever hear of the good Christian Timothy McVeigh? No? Try here if your memory is that faulty. Then there was the Atlanta Bomber.
Any sane person reading about the Israeli government’s terrorism campaign against Palestinians can see that they are the cause of their own “miseries” in the area – having killed 1,000 adults and 400 children with military attacks on civilian “targets” just in the past few years.
So, with your proofs added to mine, that’s three of the largest religious groups in the world indicted for sponsoring terrorism. And I didn’t even include the Christian-Right assassins of Doctors. It certainly isn’t the Leftist Christians – and Christ was a Leftist! – who are committing these vile acts.

  5. No, jocknerd is right. You missed his point.

You don’t see moderates of any religion or ideology killing people to further their viewpoints, do you?

No, it’s the fundamentalists, i.e. the hard-core “wings” of any religion or ideology, that demonize and sometimes kill people who don’t share their beliefs.

Timothy McVeigh was raised as a Christian, yet his anti-government hatred said it was OK to slaughter 168 men, women and little children in the Oklahoma City federal building.

He was no different than the Taliban or Al-Qaeda, or any other radical fringe group. All are driven by hate, blaming someone else to explain away their atrocities.

  6. @ NHL,

You sound like one of those people who crawl under a table and wait to be slaughtered. John C. Randolph made a logical statement which you denounced offhand. You apparently know absolutely nothing about a CCW license and those who have them.

And by the way, there is ammunition that employs frangible bullets that turn to powder when hitting a solid object. But, even a full metal jacketed bullet piercing the skin of a plane isn’t going to bring it down, unless it goes through the pilots head first.

That “think for even one second” business works both ways.

  7. Good grief, you people do really refuse to just go and do a little reading. How sad.

    Two things about Timothy McVeigh:

    1) It’s kind of interesting how all of head-in-the-sand liberals are reaching for the very same example. But to support your asinine assertions, shouldn’t there be LOTS of DIFFERENT examples. And by examples, I mean, in the here and now. In our current times. But no, you’re all bringing up McVeigh. Funny, that.

    2) Timothy McVeigh was NOT a Christian, and was certainly NOT a Christian terrorist. He did NOT yell out “Jesus is Great” as he committed his slaughter, nor did he do it in Jesus’ name. Nor, again, was he a Christian. You’ve been on the receiving end of some convenient historical revisionism. A thing liberals have to do very often, since the real facts do not support their madness.

  8. @islandgirl-
I agree that Religious Extremists are all wackjobs, but here’s the facts-

    • McVeigh (an anti Gov wackjob) was not a Religious extremist.

    • Most Acts of Terror/honor killings in the last decade have been carried out in the name of Islam.

So lets not try to replace reality with PCness.

(haha- PCness, say that fast 5 times)

  9. Adolf Hitler, was, in fact, an atheist. It’s just that he used elements of occultism as a politically manipulative device as a replacement for Christianity. But HE, himself, was an atheist. You have to be able to distinguish between religious convenience and religious belief. Hitler’s use of occultism is not unlike Obama pretending to be a Christian. Obama is no more a Christian than Osama Bin Laden. It’s just a political tool.

Educate yourself. And by that, I mean books of real scholarship. Not leftwing internet sites.

  10. It is obvious you have never shot a firearm in your life and that you know nothing about the kinds of people who have a CCW. They are no “vigilantes,” they are not cowboys, and they are not people who think we should go back to the lawlessness of the Old West. Grow up, think/experience instead of react, and try again later.

  11. @Josh

“Educate yourself. And by that, I mean books of real scholarship. Not <strike>leftwing</strike> right-wing internet sites.”

    There, fixed that for you.

I suggest you and your buddies work on your reading comprehension, too.
I made a point of saying “it’s the fundamentalists, i.e. the hard-core “wings” of any religion or ideology, that demonize and sometimes kill people who don’t share their beliefs.”

    Ideology = separate from religion.

  12. Jesus said, “You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’ But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also. And if someone wants to sue you and take your shirt, let him have your coat as well. If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles. Give to the one who asks you, and do not turn away from the one who wants to borrow from you. You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you: Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.” Matt 5:38-44
    True Christianity isn’t a fanatical religon, its a fanatical RELATIONSHIP with Jesus. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

  13. Maybe if you didn’t meddle in the affairs of other countries so much in order to secure your oil you wouldn’t need to worry about terrorists? The land of the free.. my ass, it’s one of the most fascist countries in the world right now including china!

  14. @NHL

Air marshals, of whom there are too few, are armed. My guess is no one is concerned about them bringing down a plane.

As an aside, I’m very surprised the Amsterdam airport where the flight originated didn’t have some sort of heightened passenger screening in place…bomb-sniffing dogs or equipment… since it was an overseas flight.
