Apple’s iPhone goes to war

Black Friday Apple Blowout - Part III“On Wednesday at the 2009 Intelligence Warfighting Summit in Tucson, Raytheon, the military contractor, announced an iPhone application that tracks friends and foes, shows their positions on live, real time maps and provides secure communications,” Roy Furchgott reports for The New York Times.

“Called the One Force Tracker, the Raytheon iPhone software can also be used by first responders like police, firemen, and emergency medical technicians,” Furchgott reports. “The app is completely operative and works on a standard iPhone, said J Smart, chief technology officer for Raytheon’s Intelligence and Information Systems. ‘We are really delighted to be leveraging Apple’s innovation.'”

“The adaptation of the iPhone to military use is somewhat unusual, as technology more often trickles from the military to the consumer market,” Furchgott reports. “But this is a rare case of consumer hardware and software concepts being adapted for military use.”

Furchgott reports, “Raytheon is developing other iPhone apps as well. It has also demonstrated an application that would serve to train air traffic controllers. It would not completely replace current training, but would build skills in recalling aircraft and terrain, visual scanning, on-the-fly mathematics, and rule-based decision-making, skills that also are used frequently by gamers.”

  1. What happens when the enemy forgets to charge their iPhones overnight?

Oh well no matter. Hey Raytheon, when does the app come out for flying a Predator Drone??? ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

  2. App will be available in the App Stores new Genre…

    “Top Secret”

Next, Raytheon will be submitting the Tiger Wood’s mistress app where you can see push pins on a google map of all your babes and a tracking blue pin of your wife, that uses GPS to incorporate her wherabouts!

  3. This is awesome!
When I worked for Hughes Electronics in the 90’s, GM came in and demanded Macs go away.
The employees loved them, the new CEO of GM apparently hated Steve Jobs.
Now, it seems Apple is back in the defense industry.
And where is that same GM CEO?
    POS tool.

  4. Apps to the iPhone can be installed outside the iTunes Store. Enterprise and Government IT people are provided tools by Apple to Install custom Apps without the App Store. Developers can also install Apps without the App Store and without jail breaking the iPhone. I have 2 iPhone/iPod touch Apps that all MGM/Mirage resorts are using and several other resorts are also using and they are not in the App Store and none of the iPhones or iPod touches are jail broken nor do they have to be.

  5. “to train air traffic controllers”
They should give the “Flight Control” app for just 1.99, it is very funny, addictive and trains you in all that ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  6. Interesting though – Raytheon feels the iPhone is worthy of an app for the military, to be used with sensitive wartime data, etc – – BUT, not good enough for their own network. Their entire IT department runs Blackberry, Windows XP Pro, and yes, Lotus Notes.

Troops on the frontline = today’s best
Company that supports them = still in the 1990s.
