Amazon today announced that Kindle for iPhone App for iPhone and iPod touch is now available from the Apple App Store in more than 60 additional countries. The Kindle for iPhone App features Amazon’s Whispersync technology that saves and synchronizes a customer’s bookmarks across their Kindle devices and Kindle cross-platform applications, which include Kindle for iPhone and iPod touch, Kindle for PC, and in the coming months, Kindle for Mac and Kindle for Blackberry. Kindle customers can read a few pages on their Kindle, a few more pages on their Kindle-compatible device such as an iPhone and never lose their place.
“We are excited to make the Kindle for iPhone App available to iPhone and iPod touch users in more than 60 countries, allowing them to access the vast selection of the most popular books, all available wirelessly from the Kindle Store,” said Ian Freed, vice president, Amazon Kindle. “The Kindle for iPhone App is the perfect companion for customers who own a Kindle or Kindle DX, and a great way for customers around the world to download and read books even if they don’t yet have a Kindle.”
With Kindle for iPhone and iPod touch customers in over 60 countries can:
• Purchase, download and read hundreds of thousands of books available in the Kindle Store.
• Read the beginning of books for free before they buy.
• Add and automatically synchronize bookmarks and last page read.
• Access their library of previously purchased Kindle books stored on Amazon’s servers for free.
• Choose from six different font sizes and adjust words per line.
• Add and view notes and highlights marked on Kindle and Kindle DX.
• Read books in full color including children’s books, cookbooks, travel books, textbooks and graphic novels.

I can imagine that Amazon knows that if and when the fabled Apple tablet is released, Kindle hardware is dead. Good on Amazon for seeing the writing on the wall and releasing a Kindle iPhone app anyway.
Are they still deleting “inconvenient” books from devices without alerting users?

The ‘kindling’ has turned into a flame. It’ll burn brightly – for a while, then Apple will smother the flames with a tablet of some kind.
You have a pop-up ad on your site that will not close until the video ends. It needs to be removed asap. Your site is great but your pop-up ads are out of control.

Or hell, just learn to use the damn pop-up blocker on IE, if you have to. I’m on IE7 at work, and other than that stupid ad that opens in a completely new window, I see no “pop-ups”.

How did a discussion for Kindle turn into a complaint of pop-ups?
Since Safari or Firefox, I don’t really get any pop-ups at all. It’s only after I read these comments that I realise MDN actually has pop-ups!
I think Amazon will profit more from selling apps for the iPhone and iPod Touch, since the app will also link to Amazon for the purchase of e-books. Amazon will have already tapped into at least 30 million users in their market. They can halt their “physical” Kindle already. That piece of brick is a joke!

Amazon’s hardware exists strictly as a means to sell more software, just the opposite of Apple. Thus they are more than happy to sprinkle as many options as possible for people to buy books – Kindle, iPhone/touch app, etc. Whether using a Kindle or an iPhone, Amazon wins.
