Computerworld reviews Apple 21.5-inch iMac: ‘Packs a punch for the price and, wow, what a screen!’

48 Hour Apple Sale“Last month, Apple updated its iMac all-in-one desktop computers, revamping the internal architecture and refining the look of what was an already stylish design. Externally, the biggest change for the iMacs lay in the move to larger 21.5-in. and 27-in. LED-backlit screens and a 16-by-9 aspect ratio,” Michael DeAgonia reports for Computerworld.

“While early attention focused on the 27-in. model — rightfully so, according to Computerworld’s Ken Mingis, who found the bigger iMac “stunning” — the base 21.5-in. model is attractive in its own right. The entry-level model comes with a powerful 3.06GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 4GB of RAM, a 500GB hard drive and the same Nividia 9400M video card that shows up in many of Apple’s laptops and the Mac mini. Recession-crimped holiday shoppers will want to note that it starts at $1,199 — $500 less than its big brother,” DeAgonia reports.

“First impressions are often lasting impressions, and my first impression of this iMac was: “Wow, what a screen!” While obviously not as massive as the 27-in. version, Apple’s least-expensive iMac packs a bright high-resolution screen fully capable of displaying full 1080p HD video (1920 x 1080 pixels),” DeAgonia reports.

“At the same time that Apple rolled out the new iMacs, it introduced its new Magic Mouse, Apple’s first redesign of the mouse since 2005,” DeAgonia reports. “I like the Magic Mouse; I like it so much that I have already replaced the mice on every Mac I support at work. While the two-finger swipes can be problematic (apparently, my hands aren’t flexible enough to swipe with two fingers while keeping the mouse in place), I’m totally sold on the scrolling support.”

DeAgonia reports, “Best of all, the iMac is fast — not as fast as the Core i5 and i7 models that finally shipped a couple of weeks ago, mind you, but impressively so for an entry-level unit.”

  1. ahhhhahaha. Funny stuff. Is this the superior hardware CRAPple fans rave about? The cracked screens is a shipping issue but DOA screens…not good CRAPple. Goes to prove that CRAPple hardware is the same and susceptible to the same issues as PC hardware. Hopefully this knocks CRAPples arrogance down a notch.

  2. That was a stupid first post, unless you are the only person using Snow Leopard on a PC ( With everything working as on a Mac) then you are an idiot, because you are still using windows.

There should be a moron clause to life. It should work like this. If you are an idiot, you die. That works out, because I find that 90% of the people are worthless, and 99% of those people use Windows. As you can see it would be perfect.

  3. @ I’m a PC

Atleast you are proud of using Windows, not that it is something to be proud of. Of course your parents are probably proud of you regardless. That being said, these are the same people that wouldn’t do the world the favor of drowning you at birth. It’s okay though, Bill Gates and Steve Ballmer’s parents let them live too.

  4. Dear PoC,

Actually many of the components in your pc are inferior, like power supplies that are spec’ed to the minimum. That’s why so many people say that the boxes the Dells ship in are the only thing worth keeping.

It may well be that the problems Apple is having with the 27″ iMacs is because Apple is pushing the envelope.

My, my you have a very high opinion of yourself, don’t you? You’re both trolls. I can understand why he talks the way he does, its what windows trolls do.

You on the other hand, like to make everything about you, huh? You took his post personally, and suddenly you’re attacking his parents?

Everyone else responding to similar windows trolls, simply challenge their knowledge. Not you, you go after them with childish abandon as though you were a ten-year-old. Honestly, what’s wrong with you?

This is not the first time you’ve done this either. You’ve already threatened me with physical harm, just for calling you out. I seriously doubt you’re going to let this pass either.

But if you continue to act in this childish it will be reported, for all the good it will do.

    Cheers!

  6. I’m a PC:

I won’t knock your comments-each to his own, even if most of us think they are wrong. However, what is sad is that your (juvenile) life is seemingly so empty that it appears that you have nothing better to do than be a troll on an Apple site. What a truly pathetic, wretched life you must lead.

  7. @PC

You keep using that word and I don’t think you know what arrogance means. And since when does arrogance come in notches, and how many notches of arrogance do you possess?

Are you the best PC has to offer in the way of trolls? Because I gotta’ say, I think MDN got taken for a ride when they settled on you.

You rarely, if ever, reply to our challenges. And you’re not very good at belittling us or Apple. You haven’t had an original thought about our platform, ever. Sure, you come here packing URLs, but they’re not yours, they’re some other trolls and quite frankly I think we should get them over here, and send you packing.

WE WANT A REAL TROLL, MDN!! Not some sophomoric panty waist who is reduced to name calling after he’s shot his wad.

  8. Ya’ know, I’ve never actually gone to a PCFanBoy site to troll those there with my “WinBloze” opinions. (Don’t you just love the infantile “Crapple” comment above?)

So . . . what kind of pathetic, vacuous life must one have in order to visit here and flick boogers on MDN readers? Have you nothing else more productive to do, “I’m a PatheticCreep”?

Go back to your blue screen of death and do your best to get past it, OK? You’re gonna need all the time you can get to remove crapware, adware, spyware, viruses, trojans, worms, and the like from your basement-assembled, $200 masterpiece.

P.S. You might want to look first for the child pornography that your beloved OS allowed to be installed on your machine without your knowledge recently. Ask that guy who has been in prison for the past 11 months how much he likes the WinDoze milieu!

  9. 1) emotionally stunted person reaches out to a group of people by spewing hatred, ignorance or just plain stupidity.

    2) people respond to the garbage.

    3) mentally challenged person feels validated by the attention he receives, continues to post tripe.

Everyone posting in response to the trolls, it’s your fault they are here.
Ignore them and they will go elsewhere.

  10. @ IMAPCBITCH,

Your best weapon is a 7-year old girl showing cartoons on Win 7.
Your POS home-made craPC is something that belongs in a dorm-room, or the basement of a perv that lives in his mommy’s basement and trolls MDN over AOL.
Fat, greasy guys like you keep my AAPL rising ever-higher, and my hardware/software is the best there is.
Go eat another Win7 Whopper you fat, greasy troll.

  11. Apple’s least-expensive iMac packs a bright high-resolution screen fully capable of displaying full 1080p HD video (1920 x 1080 pixels),
Yeah, but what can you show that takes advantage of that?
Can we stop all this dumb-ass Pc/Mac hate fest shit?
Poeple should just talk about what would make computers BETTER, in their opinion. Whatever that opinion is. As for me, well we all know I want Blu-ray recording capability. But on Sunday, I watched an add for the ipod nano with camera built-in. It looked cool. Apple is giving people a product they want. I can ask for MORE, and see, I can do it without all the hate. Love. A four letter word not used as much these days.
