Apple’s new Verizon-swatting iPhone ads (with video and schedule)

“Apple is launching two new iPhone ads on TV tonight. The ads are intended to tout the iPhone’s ability to hold a simultaneous voice and data connection at the same time, something you notably can’t do [on Verizon’s network],” Arik Hesseldahl reports for BusinessWeek. “Here we see Apple doing its part as both a good AT&T partner, and touting a great feature of the iPhone all at once.”

Hesseldahl reports, “The ads will appear tonight during ‘House’ on Fox, ‘Dancing With The Stars’ on ABC, ‘How I Met Your Mother’ on CBS and several others including ‘The Daily Show’ on Comedy Central and several of the late-night talk shows.”

  1. iPhone is the best phone all around no doubt but if you can’t get on the network or even stay on the network than no, AT&T;can’t do that. AT&T;needs to upgrade its network. What good is all of these great abilities if AT&T;can’t service them up?

  2. It is EVER thus: Start an advertising war mentioning your competitor by name, and watch out for the return volley. It will be ugly, withering, and economically devastating.

    FYI: None of my smartphone-Verizon friends can or could defend not being able to call and data surf at the same time. And because they all live in well-served, metropolitan 3G areas (not in the hinterlands of Utah), they could offer no defense for the inapplicable Verizon ads.

    Sure ATT ain’t perfect, but anyone who thinks Verizon IS needs to run, not walk, to his nearest psychotherapist.

  3. I love this feature of the iPhone and use it a lot. Unfortunately, having that big, green bar across the top of the iPhone’s screen that says “Touch to RETURN to call” is contradictory to the voice-over, which says, “without ever having to leave the call.”

    Why would you have to return to something you never left?

    Again, I understand that the call keeps going, but I use this feature. I’m afraid that consumers who’ve never used the iPhone will be confused.

  4. To be fair to Verizon they never actually say “iPhone” anywhere. And the “Island of Misfit Toys” phone is clearly a cheap knock-off. Still, they started this ad war. I hope they’re prepared for the fallout. Hopefully they’ll NEVER get to officially carry the iPhone, even when they switch to LTE.

  5. great ads but not sure that regular non-iphone users will necessarily make the connection and understand that the conversation is actually live and ongoing. they may just think it is just on hold or something since there is no conversation taking place while the data functions are demonstrated . just my 2 cents

    @neo
    att probably has great service wherever you are, it does everywhere that I go

  6. I just tried that on my Edge and it says you can’t connect to data services while calling. And you know what that means, it’s lawsuit time! I already called my lawyer. It will be a merry Christmas indeed.

    AT&T;sucks on the west side of Los Angeles, It’s completely unusable in NYC and San Francisco. When you are on the move in Los Angeles calls are dropped constantly. And if you are at an event forget about using your phone period.

    I’ve had all three models of the iPhone and the network has been getting worst with the growth.

    Apple is spot on with the iPhone. Make no mistake. I am here because of the iPhone. Great innovation. I pay a premium and yet AT&T;is substandard.

  8. @ neo;

    As someone who “switched” from Verizon (after 4 years on their so-called “network”), let me correct your post.

    iPhone is the best phone all around no doubt but if you can’t get on the network or even stay on the network than no, Verizon can’t do that. Verizon needs to upgrade its network. What good is all of these great abilities if Verizon can’t service them up?

    (please excuse the poor grammar and atrocious spelling- Those belong solely to Neo- I had only the time to correct his factual inaccuracies)
