Gizmodo reviews Apple’s Multi-Touch™ Magic Mouse: ‘The best mouse Apple has ever made’

“The Magic Mouse is undoubtedly the best mouse Apple’s made in years. They’ve taken their knowledge in trackpad finger gestures and one-piece manufacturing and made this delicate, yet sturdy, bridge-shaped mouse. The question is how it compares to other mice,” Jason Chen reports for Gizmodo.

“Even though there’s no clear delineation between right and left buttons on the mouse itself, the Magic Mouse knows to interpret a click on the left or right half appropriately (though right click needs to be activated from inside System Preferences before you can use it),” Chen reports.

“The Magic Mouse is a very, very pretty mouse—something you wouldn’t feel like you had to hide when not in use—and looks different enough from other mice that people will ask who made it, before awkwardly mumbling a nevermind as they spot the grey Apple logo,” Chen reports. “Compared to ergonomic mice, the Magic Mouse is really low and aerodynamic, which means it doesn’t contour to your hand and doesn’t give the sensation that the mouse is a part of your hand.”

“Is this the best mouse Apple has ever made Yeah, it is,” Chen reports. “The Magic Mouse is much better than the Mighty Mouse, which [some] people hated, and might actually be good enough that non-Mac users might want to pick it up as well, supposing that they don’t really care about ergonomics. Since it fills the gap between a tiny travel mouse and a full sized desktop mouse, the Magic is in a good position to grab users on both ends.”

  1. does someone want to explain to me how this mouse is NOT ergonomic? i suppose it isnt if youre planning on throwing it like a baseball, but its used on a flat table. with the magic mouse your hand is comfortably pronated, without the need to extend your wrists.

  2. People are dragging heavily when doing the two finger scrolling left and right, so the mouse moves. OR they are gripping the edges so tightly that it hurts to swipe eft and right at the same time.

Just need to loosen up and **lightly** drag left and right with two fingers, the mouse won’t move. Don’t do what the Apple video shows, which is gripping mouse firmly while swiping left and right. THAT’S bad ergonomcs.

It should feel just like using a large trackball—you swiped left and right without needing to grip the mouse base.

    I sound like I’m teaching rodent husbandry…

  3. The title kind of seems like damning it with faint praise. I mean, it’s not hard to beat an Apple mouse, even the Mighty Mouse, while good when the scroll ball worked, was otherwise an unreliable, ergonomic nightmare.

  4. It is just so dumb to have to go into preferences to enable right-click.

It’s natural, normal and everyone does it. Apple need to get over it. Can’t we expect obvious functions to function out of the box?

I could have sworn that it comes defaulted to enable right-clicking.

    Am I missing something?

  6. When someone sees it, and watches how intuitive the thing works, there is no need to explain which brand makes it. Right away Apple comes to mind. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />

  7. breeze,

Maybe you should do some research before throwing insults around because you are so wrong. The first computer was invented around 1964. See the first link for details.

It was Apple that brought the mouse to prominence in the early ’80s. See second reference.

R2 was giving an opinion and so that qualifies for an insult? Well the egg is truly on your face buddy.

For what it’s worth to a large extent I agree with R2. The Mighty Mouse is prone to failure because it picks up small amounts of grit in the pea size scroller.

This is my second mouse in 14 months and every few weeks I have to run a piece of paper over the scroller because of this problem (and that method of cleaning was recommended by an AppleCare representative). I was actually following Apple’s advice and the first mouse packed it in.

The best Apple mouse I can remember (and I’ve been using macs since 1993) was the M0100 (which I still have) and it was so comfortable. It had one big button and half way up the button the whole surface began to slope downwards (see link).

Again this is only an opinion and in a free country everyone is entitled to an opinion. It’s only in authoritarian states that we ridicule people for an opinion on computer accessories.

Oh and for the record there were people (definitely not me) who loved the M4848, which was popularly known as the hockey puck mouse. I could never get that sucker to point in the right direction.

I hope Apple does get it right because I haven’t liked their offerings since the Pro Mouse (M5769) which frankly was a work of art, it was comfortable and the whole mouse was a button. In fact I’m now changing my opinion because I think this was the best Apple mouse and the early 80s’ offering (as mentioned before) was the second best example. Again this is an opinion. Anyone else want to put in their two cents worth for the Apple mouse they liked?

  8. I’m still using my White Pro Mouse (M5769), replaced for the original that came with my G4 iMac. I tried other mouses, other brands, even wireless, but I kept on coming back to Apple’s Mouse. I replaced my mouse (bad wire) just when the Mighty Mouse was coming out, but I still love the look and feel of the White Pro.

Still running Tiger on an 800MHz, so I’ll have to get a new Mac to enjoy the new Magic Mouse.

  9. MacSmiley,

I’ve still have one at home and wish I could use it. Alas, Intel macs don’t like them. Bummer, it really was a work of art. Any other opinions on Apple’s best mouse (or any mouse for that matter).
