“We’ve just received a tip that an iPhone radio.app is being developed in-house by Apple for use on the iPhone and iPod touch. From what we know, the app will be allowed to operate in the background like iPod.app and will offer the same functionality as the FM radio in the new iPod nanos,” Seth Weintraub reports for 9 to 5 Mac.
“The source mentioned that this application could also be incorporated into the iPod.app before release,” Weintraub reports. “Though it wasn’t specified, the app will likely have the same Live Pause functionality that the Nanos currently enjoy.”
Weintraub reports, “Apple’s iPods and iPhones have been able to receive FM radio signals for some time now [and] this wouldn’t be the first time Apple awoke sleeping hardware functionality from its mobile products… For instance, Apple didn’t enable Bluetooth in its 2nd generation iPod touch until 9 months after it was released.”

If they’re going to include FM, they should make it HD and make those Zune guys stfu!
I hate FM radio comments in 1 …2 … 3
Personally, I like it. Not for music. That sucks. But for local news and sports talk.
Go Broncos!!
But what if I don’t want to hear the mellow sounds of smooth jazz or the pure Obama adoration of NPR?
Cool, as long as it’s implemented in an elegant way.
yeah, but when are they going to enable the cassette tape option…. THAT’S what I’m waiting for.
@iPhoner…. I’d love to talk smack at you about this monday night’s game, being a Charger fan and as I’ll be there in the east end zone. But unless we find a Nose Tackle on waivers this week, this game is already over. Your defense looks pretty stout.
The real question is. Which iPhones have a fm tuner built in ?
I know this is off topic but I have a Mac vs PC debate going on I need your help. He wants to compare an evenly matched (spec for spec) Mac with a PC it’s a $100 bet that a PC is cheaper. Help me compare I need to win this. Thanks in advance
@Jim – TIV
With the smackdown the Chargers have given the Broncos the last few years I wouldn’t count them out. Division rivals always play each other tough regardless of the year. (Except for the Raiders – Haha – Long Live Al Davis!)
Bookies have Chargers favored by 3.5? Huh?
Whats your take on McDaniels? I hated the Cutler trade but it seems like the man knows what he’s doing.
Yet another excuse to take my Grado Labs SR125 cans with me wherever I go. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”tongue laugh” style=”border:0;” />
@ Silver Surfer:
If it is really an spec for spec bet and that means the same quality, you would have to compare the best PC against a Mac. All things considered, the best PC to run any Windows OS is a mac.
So its a tie.
Just my $0.02
@bon
You mean like this?
http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/features/fm-radio.html
I suppose this is to attract the holds out that “MUST HAVE” FM radio on their player. Personally I haven’t listened to FM Radio in years, but its good for Apple to add it for those users who are holding out for radio.
iPhoner…. I like McDaniels. He was a great OC and I think he’s brought a new toughness to the Broncos that hasn’t been seen since #7. I actually hated the trade for personal reasons, Cutler always found a way to lose to us. And… it was always so fun watching him pout about it. Yeah he puts up great yardage, but you can get in his head. And that’s what Rivers and our D were really good at.
The problem with the Charges this year is that we can’t run, and we can’t stop the run. We pass like the air Coryell days of old, and we can stop the pass. The Oakland game was brutal. 5 players out with injury, 2 pro-bowl lineman (our center and our nose tackle). And you just can’t run without a great center, and you can’t play the 3/4 defense without a stud nose tackle.
There’s been rumors that Cleveland is willing to trade their hot shot NT to us this week, but we’ll see. The Spanos’ are notoriously tight fisted, at least until they ponied up serious $$ for Rivers renewal this year.
Should be a great game, only one I have time to go to this year.
I like NPR and KROQ out here in LA. So, it will be welcome, if true.

Sounds like football – played with the hands. Man U for the Premier League.
“I like NPR”. Lib radio, paid for with your tax dollars. What a wonderful world it’s going to be with the Chosen One.
@Jim – TIV
Ya, I know what you mean about Cutler. He would really get pissed off at times and it would take him out of his game. Rivers sure liked to give him hell.
But man, when McDaniels came in here and traded Cutler away I thought it was one of the worst decisions ever. Traded for who again? Orton? The guy who couldn’t beat out Griese? You’ve gotta be kidding me. And then, it looked like Brandon Marshall was headed out of town and I thought we were in for a real long season. Especially with 8 new players on defense.
Well – it looks like McDaniels and Mike Nolan know how to select talent. Amazing transformation from last year. I predicted a 4 – 12 record – for them to start off 5 – 0 is pretty unexpected.
Sproles has always been a nightmare for the Broncos. But it looks like rushing yards are down. Must be the O line.
Have a good time at the game. But not too good. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
We know you only hate NPR because they use more than 2-syllable words.
This will probably come true like the new iMacs three weeks ago! Which still haven’t arrived.
iTunes tagging equals mo money
so it seems likely to me
Holy underground radio Batman! That would be cool.
@ron. Uh, NPR listeners, who a politically across the spectrum, pay via subscription to support their radio stations and give it away to everyone else (thus a fraction of indirect govt. support). Commercial radio (Rush, et al) sell time to advertisers who make everyone pay at the cash register. The hidden support goes both ways, one approved by congress and the other controlled by the invisible hand of the marketplace.
This is great. Not because I like FM radio, but because my gym has a bunch TVs on the wall with FM signals I can dial into so people can listen to the TVs while doing cardio.
Pretty nice that existing iPhones and iPod touches already have this functionality in their hardware.
It’s great to see Charger and Bronco fans here talkin’ football. As a Charger fan since ’78, I’m with Jim, but the Broncos have started way beyond what anyone expected. Congrats, but the Chargers will start their annual comeback with a win this Sunday. (I hope).
As for the radio: I’ve found that with my audio library, podcasts, and audiobooks, there isn’t much need for an FM radio. If I’m listening to radio, it is talk programs on AM. There are tons of Sports, politics, news, computer and other topical shows on AM in Los Angeles. But I’ve noticed around the country that the AM band is pretty barren in many parts of the country. I guess that is why so many want FM. This is not a app I will make use of in my town, but will be very attractive to others I’m sure.
FM Radio? Whee.
