Apple’s new iPod nano with built-in video camera might not be welcome in locker rooms

Apple Store“Compact camera-equipped devices, such as cell phones, have been gadgets non grata at health clubs for years. The Life Time chain, for instance, has long forbidden their use in locker rooms because of the potential for compromising photos or video footage to be distributed online,” Julio Ojeda-Zapata reports for The Pioneer Press.

And with Apple’s new iPod nano now “fitting this category, its use in locker rooms for any reason is forbidden, said spokesman Jason Thunstrom. Discerning whether someone is taking video or just queuing up a music mix can be difficult,” Ojeda-Zapata reports. “The new Nano’s use for music listening would be tolerated in workout areas, Thunstrom added, but shooting videos with it while exercising is a no-no.”

Ojeda-Zapata reports, “How health clubs can curb Nano use remains to be seen. The new Nano is indistinguishable from its camera-less precursor, especially when tucked into a protective case… Some health club patrons will be eager to use the new Nano because of another first-time feature in an iPod — an FM tuner, which lets patrons use gym TVs with preassigned FM frequencies.”

Ojeda-Zapata reports, “Camera use in changing areas is not a concern at 1,200 Anytime Fitness facilities in 48 states because the small rooms can be used by only one person at a time, said Mark Daly, spokesman for the Hastings-based company.”

  1. Yawn.

This is a tired old non-issue. I remember the same articles being written when cameras started showing up on phones. I think in the last 8 years I’ve had a phone on my camera, ‘ve been asked to surrender it exactly once. It certainly hasn’t been an issue with sales or popularity of these devices.

People who want to take inappropriate pictures are going to find a way. Everyone else will continue being good citizens.

  2. There are definitely places that make you leave cameras at security when you check in. Some military bases and contractors, as well as a metal plating business that I work for regularly. I keep an old unlocked Motorola phone so I can pop my SIM card in it for such occasions. It cost me about 20 bucks on eBay.

As for public gyms, I just keep my phone and camera in my bag and out of sight when I walk through the locker rooms. Nobody’s ever asked me to leave them outside.

  3. Balderdash. The way Amazon counts it, it splits up the nano models based on colour. Thus, while the iPod touch, for example, gets counted as all 8GB models in one entry, the nano gets separate entries for silver, blue, etc. If you scan down the list you’ll find it holds a number of the top spots, albeit 8th on the list and downward… if you combined the colours it would no doubt be much higher on the list.

  4. After reading this article I need to put some electrical tape over the camera on my iPhone the next time I venture to my health club. The last thing I want is to accidently take a picture of one of the fat asses walking out of the shower in the locker room. The image would burn a hole in one of my brain lobes.

  5. Would you take a nano to a locker room?
Or tied to a shoe, would you?
How about a shopping store, tucked between the change room door.
Would you take a nano to a public bathroom, layed out on the floor.

The nano bra for all that you saw.
Would you take a nano on the beach.
Well in Germany who would care.
Lots of places to go bare.

Would you place a nano under a foot?
If you are Balmer might be worth a hoot.
Nano’s nearly everywhere take them to the moon.
Just avoid placing the nano, where they place the Zune.
