Analyst: Apple should consider buying Sonos

“Apple should ponder acquiring Sonos in a move to tackle the home audio networking market, a small niche with big potential, according to an analyst,” Larry Dignan blogs for ZDNet.

“That’s the takeaway from a research note penned by William Blair analyst Ralph Schackart,” Dignan writes. “The report makes a lot of sense.”

The logic goes like this:
• Apple should enter the home audio networking market to extend iTunes and provide subscription services;
• Sonos would round out Apple’s lineup;
• There’s a lot of headroom in the home audio networking market.

Dignan reports, “Sonos is privately held. The company’s wireless networking gear distributes iTunes and other services like Pandora and Sirius XM throughout your home. If Apple bought Sonos, Schackart reckons that the market is worth an additional $2 a share in earnings to the company.”

  1. @HD Boy,

    Neither McIntosh, nor D&M;currently have a trademark for Macintosh. I couldn’t find any dead or abandoned trademarks for Macintosh that belonged to them either.

    However, Apple certainly wouldn’t use Macintosh for any stereo related gear anyway. Macintosh represents their line of computers. Note whenever Apple released speakers, they didn’t use Macintosh anywhere in the name:
    AppleDesign Powered Speakers
    AppleDesign Powered Speakers II
    Appel HiFi

    Likewise with other audio or home theater equipment:
    Apple PowerCD
    Apple TV

    And things like Airtunes, Airport Express, etc…

    That being said, Apple really wouldn’t gain anything by buying Sonos. It would just complicate things. And with that being said, I wouldn’t mind seeing Apple buy TiVo…mostly for the patents.

    I’d really like to see Apple buy Adobe.

  2. There is absolutely nothing that Sonos does better than Apple could do with about 10% more focus on its iPod touch/iPhone integration with the Apple TV and/or the Airport Express.

  3. I am surprised I am not seeing this switch from an AUDIO ONLY discussion to AUDIO and VIDEO.
    It seems to me that the next big thing is going to be wireless HD (audio and video) within homes. How many people have issues with wanting to watch TV in bed or on the back porch (or washroom for that matter) because they don’t want to drill through walls and floors?
    Apple is 50% of the way there with their AIRPORT Express, and there are other companies starting to bring solutions to market…. I find it hard to believe that Apple won’t be a player in this Wireless Entertainment HomeNet.

    Bring it – I WANT it now! Allow me to hook other sources into it including an improved AppleTV and this would be huge. Imagine- no duplication of equipment, money savings, everything controlled with an iPhone, iTablet, iPod Touch… heaven.

  4. Sonos is f*cking expensive.
    There’s only space for so many high-end niche products in the Apple-portfolio (like MacPro/ 30″ display).
    Typical Sonos-setups cost how much? 1500 Euro?
    That excludes speakers, of course. You don’t want 25€ speakers with that…
