“Among the new features of Apple’s iTunes 9 media software is.. that [it] prevents the Palm Pre from synching with it,” John Paczkowski reports for AllThingsD.
Paczkowski reports, “This should come as no surprise since Apple has done this before, most recently with iTunes 8.2.1, which, as Apple spokesperson Nat Kerris explained to me at the time, ‘disables devices falsely pretending to be iPods, including the Palm Pre.'”

Palm is beleagured.
‘disables devices falsely pretending to be iPods’? Is it possible to not falsely pretend?
Perhaps if Palm could _sincerely_ pretend? Do you think Apple would then be a bit more understanding?
Sincerity is MUCH better than falsehood!
Ahhh … what a waste! It’s one thing to make reasonable code changes that MIGHT effect how a parasite attaches to your service, quite another to make changes just to limit that activity. It isn’t like Palm has any significant impact on any part of Apple’s business!
Treat them the way you do Real. Give them the chance to piggy-back on your success and watch them stumble and fail. Don’t give them the free headlines and court cases, just let them crash on their own.
Palm should take a leaf out of RIM’s book and use its own software to sync with an iTunes library.
@DLMeyer
Do you own AAPL, DLM? Well, I do, and a shipload of it . . . and I don’t won’t any–read that A-N-Y–other entity to freeload off the funds I’ve invested in Apple, Inc.
Palm, a once-proud company with original ideas, is little more than a pathetic, decaying shell now with Jon Rubinstein holding services over the corpse.
Let them rot, one and all, until they find some pride of ownership and develop their own iTunes-like store. Enough of the getting-it-for-free mentality of this once-great country! Enough!
@Uther P.:
I could not have said it any better. Thanks.
Palm could be a worthy competitor to Apple if they didn’t copy them and if their products were as good as they make them out to be.
Sadly, they copied use of the iTunes store and MultiTouch (both of which are copyright works) and all their stuff is reported to be cheaply made.
Thus: buzz off Palm – and get a life.
This is so predictable of course – and makes Palm look like a bunch of amateurs, trying to stow away on the Apple Store and hope Apple wouldn’t notice… pfft.
Guys let’s worry about Apple. No real innovation with the touch, nano or classic. Microsoft Zune HD is far better. Infact Apple is copying Microsoft now!
It looks like it is recess time again, Mary is back. I guess we’ll hear from Peter & Paul as well unless they are still in detention!
Apple is copying Microsoft? Did they add a registry to everything? Did all the iPods stop working?
Does anybody know how their customer is taking the news?
You know, with the iTunes store now being the number 1 music seller, I am betting some antitrust claims will start to appear.
@Mary
Are you sick, or just plain confused!? The Touch IS THE INNOVATION! Everything else is just a pale copy trying to capitalize on its success. Or in the immortal words of Morris Day…. Dey just a squirrel try-na git-a-nut.
@NCIceman
Ah, that would be no.
Apple has slapped Palm so much that it sounds like the clap…that keeps coming back.
“Do you own AAPL, DLM? Well, I do, and a shipload of it . . . and I don’t won’t any–read that A-N-Y–other entity to freeload off the funds I’ve invested in Apple, Inc.”
Dude, get over yourself. Nobody gives a shit about your portfolio. Frankly, neither does Apple give a shit about your shares or what you want.
@Mary
I think ZuneTang forgot to change his screen name before posting…
This might be a case of defend it or lose it.
They should have asked politely before…
I fully agree with Apple. How is what Palm was doing any different from simple identity theft?
Apparently Palm rubs Jobs the wrong way….Ow!
@F. Maxwell
Touche’! Nicely said.
