AT&T: Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS) coming to Apple iPhone on September 25th

Apple Online Store AT&T has issued “An Update on iPhone MMS for our Mobility Customers” the text of which follows verbatim:

We know many of our iPhone customers are eager for an update on our rollout schedule for Multimedia Messaging Service (MMS). We’ve been working for the past several months to prepare our systems and network to ensure the best possible experience with MMS when it launches – and that launch date is: September 25 for iPhone 3G and 3GS customers. MMS will be enabled through a software update on that day.

We know that iPhone users will embrace MMS. The unique capabilities and high usage of the iPhone’s multimedia capabilities required us to work on our network MMS architecture to carry the expected record volumes of MMS traffic and ensure an excellent experience from Day One. We appreciate your patience as we work toward that end.

We’re riding the leading edge of smartphone growth that’s resulted in an explosion of traffic over the AT&T network. Wireless use on our network has grown an average of 350 percent year-over-year for the past two years, and is projected to continue at a rapid pace in 2009 and beyond. The volume of smartphone data traffic the AT&T network is handling is unmatched in the wireless industry. We want you to know that we’re working relentlessly to innovate and invest in our network to anticipate this growth in usage and to stay ahead of the anticipated growth in data demand, new devices and applications for years to come.

We thank you for your business and look forward to keeping you updated on our initiatives.

  1. Oh great! I will use it… never.

I think at&t;did a good think waiting with the rollout, it’s better to have people who complain about MMS not being available than piss customers off with bad service

  2. MDN …

Not to argue with you, but “technically” … according to Wiki …

  4. the real news here is that there should be No Reason carriers treat MMS different from internet usage
the future should be one big dumb pipe for all connected devices

hopefully Apple will lead the way in standardization

personally I am excited for some carrier competition and the further growing of the industry by the iphone.

the exclusive with att has served its purpose, now its time to move on!

  5. The end of summer (or any season) is on the equinox and of course that makes sense.

Down under it is the first of the month. For example, Spring is September 1st.

Now frankly I don’t care if one country has one standard and another country has another standard, but what is really hilarious is trying to explain it to Australians. It really makes me laugh.

What is the difference? Well take your most redneck inbred hick from the nothern hemisphere. If you come up to a point where you disagree on something you will get the typical “Hey, it is my way or the highway response”.

Down under it is a whole different ball of wax. They can’t conceive of what a highway is. Alternatives do not exist. It is incredible to see first hand.

  6. why is every bitching about 3 days, to tell you the truth being 3 days off for AT&T;is a landmark. ask yourself how long they keep promising 3G in your area if you don’t have it. or even when are you going to be done fixing it in my area? or when are you going to finally cover my area?

  7. Jeez people, stop calling the iphone a “Smart phone” blackberrys are smart phones and are still lightyears from what the iphone is, It’s a freakin GENIUS PHONE, you better recognize!

  8. First matte screen on unibody MBP 15″, now this… Next thing you know, we’ll get tethering and suddenly, MDN <strike>whin</strike> comments will drop by 85%.

We urgently need another obscure missing feature on iPhone/Mac to <strike>whi</strike> comment about…
