Apple to hold special media event on September 9: ‘It’s only rock and roll, but we like it’

Apple has sent out invites to select media sources for a special event to be held at the Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater in San Francisco:

At the event, it’s speculated by tech bloggers and media that Apple will launch new iPod models, one or more of which may feature built-in cameras, for the 2009 holiday shopping season. A demo and/or release of iTunes 9 is also considered by some pundits to be a possibility.

MacDailyNews Take: With the title, ‘It’s only rock and roll, but we like it,’ it’s tough to imagine anything related to The Beatles being announced at the event.

  1. The Beatles need to get off their high horse. They are not making any more new music (duh) and everything they have is already floating around somewhere in high quality rips on the web.

They mighty have waited toooooo long to jump onto the iTunes bandwagon.

  2. Number 9, Number 9, Number 9… indeed!

A Beatles announcement, in conjunction with new iPods, etc. would make sense. Especially since The Beatles entire, remastered catalogue is due to be released this month.

Do you ‘spose Paul or Ringo might show up as a “just one more thing”?

  3. @deepdish…

ACTUALLY, the currently available recordings are acknowledged as rather poorly engineered transfers from the 80’s. George Martin and his son have been digitally remastering the entire catalogue.

Even though I already own the 80’s CDs, I will certainly buy all the albums again. I hope the re-releases are hybrid SACD disks!

  4. I wonder when Apple will do an iPod/iTunes ad with some air conducting to some Mahler or something… for us classical freaks!

We ALL do it, whether we admit it or not. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
I could suggest a slew of great pieces for ad ad!

  5. Agreed…the Beatles diverse hook songwriting skills surely are at or near the top, but not in another escalated category all by themselves.

The Beatles should think of themselves as a little less SPECIAL…Jobs should shun them at this point…getting them is not worth the effort this late in the game, and iTunes is doing fine without them, and it is even more free publicity. Publicity doesn’t always have to be positive to make Apple money.

  6. The BIG question is (and possibly the most important one)…

Will Steve be taking the lead presenter role? I would LOVE to see a healthy-looking Steve Jobs walk in to thunderous applause and a standing ovation. Everything after that would be icing on the cake.

  7. 1. There will be NO Beatles announcement. They are about to release a huge set of new remastered CDs. They aren’t going onto iTunes when they have these discs to sell.
    2. Quit saying the Beatles need to get off their high horse. It’s Yoko that is blocking the deal, and she’s no Beatle.

I’m not a huge Beatles fan, but saying that the Beatles should “think of themselves as a little less special”, I think ignores the magnatude of their contribution.

Their influence on American popular music goes way beyond a well-crafted hook (in fact, most popular music at the time was nothing more than that). The first thing the Beatles did was run a clinic on tight performances and vocal harmonizing that most American bands instantly copied – the “diverse hook” would never be the same after the Beatles.

Later, they innovated again in the studio; bringing a stunning depth of instrumentation, mixtures of global music, and pioneering studio techniques to make sounds that had never been heard before. Listen to Sgt. Pepper, Abbey Road, and the White Album and you’ll see that it goes way beyond a catchy riff.

As far as Jobs “shunning” them: Not. A. Chance. It’s well-known that he’s a big fan. Jobs will have his Beatles on iTunes, sooner or later.

  9. The Beatles estate already milked Apple for the use of the name ‘Apple’. Since that has been settled, I don’t care too much one way or the other regarding the Beatles rumored foray onto the iTunes Store. If they want to sell on iTunes, fine. If not, that’s fine, too.

  10. Despite The Stones lyric, The Beatles are a rock band, so my guess it is still on. Why else would rock music be mentioned exclusively (no Pop, Alternative, etc. especially when rock is rarely on the top purchases) I feel that The Beatles will be mentioned and I wouldn’t be surprised if the iTunes Music Store has some kind of exclusive set of music/videos that can’t be purchased elsewhere. No new material from them, just some extra bonuses like interviews with the engineers who did the remastering. No Yellow Submarine iPod!
