Apple says isolated reports of iPhone broken screens not caused by battery, but by ‘external force’

“A number of iPhones that reportedly ‘exploded’ in France were not due to the battery overheating as had been suggested, Apple has said,” The BBC News reports.

“The firm said that all of the handsets they had seen with broken screens were caused by an ‘external force,'” The Beeb reports.

“‘To date, there are no confirmed battery overheating incidents for iPhone 3GS and the number of reports we are investigating is in the single digits,’ Apple said in a statement,” ” The Beeb reports. “Apple has sold 26 million iPhones and 200 million iPods to date. ‘The iPhones with broken glass that we have analysed to date show that in all cases the glass cracked due to an external force that was applied to the iPhone,’ [Apple said.”

  1. Slightly off topic… I just exchanged an iPhone 3G for erratic behavior, thinking it’s a hardware issue (no, it’s not a teenager). Brought it home, restored my data – worked fine until I used the MobileMe iDisk app. Then the new phone did all the same behaviors, so I deleted the iDisk app. Now phone appears to work normally again.

HTH someone out there. I’ve reported it to Apple Mobile Me.

  2. I was debating whether or not to report to MDN that in the last 3 weeks, Yahoo! Canada has reported three (yes, 3) times about the ‘exploding’ or ‘overheating’ iPhones. The story comes out about once a week.

Funny, since Yahoo! was taken over by Microsoft, the FUD level went up dramatically. I wonder if they’ll eat crow for that now, or will they spin it as Apple lying to try and save its butt?

  4. Microsoft pans Apple for being “too cool” for ditzy college-age chicks and their moms when they walk into a store all fat, dumb, and happy, all ready to learn about computers and make a decision in 20 minutes.

Then they have the arrogance of pretending to ignore that “cool” is an important factor for buyers of all-things-Apple.

Then they compound arrogance with out-right cluelessness regarding how to design products that are truly integrated in an elegant fashion and have amazing attention to detail. You can’t shoe-horn features into a big turd and expect it to succeed because it’s a big turd full of features and is made by a Caterpillar D-9 of a company that has long been accustomed to smashing competitors flat.
