IDC: Apple’s Mac takes 10% share of Canadian PC market

“Canada may have the highest proportional number of Mac users in the world after recent gains by Apple, according to an IDC study of computer sales in the country during the spring,” Electronista reports.

“The American company broke into double-digit share there for the first time by accounting for 10 percent of all non-server computers shipped between March and June,” Electronista reports. “Such a gain left it only behind HP and Dell, who held on to 22.1 percent and 20.7 percent respectively.”

Electronista reports, “Most of Apple’s climb is attributed to a sharp rise in its sales of MacBooks, which jumped 24.8 percent from year to year. HP by comparison saw its shipments of any type of PC plummet 25.3 percent in that same period. Acer was still the clear leader of the notebook category in Canada with 57.5 percent of the field due to its dominance of netbooks, but the researchers suggest that Apple held virtually all of the market outside of that price range.”

  1. We still have money, we have Universal health care, our banking system is the most solid in the world, and we had 7 straight government surpluses. Except for thus year because we bailed out those miserable US motor companies.

So yeah, we can afford to go with quality.

  2. All about the trend until Windows 7 ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

You see… What Microsoft did to people with Vista, Apple is doing with Snow Leopard.

If you have a high end PowerPC from 2006, you are SOL if you want Snow Leopard!

At least with Microsoft, you could still use your system as long as you updated some hardware to make it work with Vista.

I feel for the people who have those high end Mac Pro’s. LOL

You are truly forced to go buy a new Mac and help Apple maintain its marketshare of under 10%…

I can’t wait to see how Windows 7 does. It has amazing reviews. I have used and was overly surprised. Now I want Windows on my Mac.

  3. @Zoe
Professionals like myself who use (or used) Power Mac G5 towers know that their equipment is old. It’s already out of (extended) warranty, and fully depreciated by now. It’s time to upgrade anyway, and what better time than to get a spanking new Mac Pro with Snow Leopard already installed? Apple changed the designation to Mac Pro when it changed to Intel inside. The Intel transition actually began in January 2006, and was completed with the release of the first Mac Pro in August 2006. That means the most recent G5 models are already more than 3 years old.

  4. Way to go Canadians sticking it to the Man in Redmond…

@ Zoe too bad Windows 7 is still slower then XP and more bloated then XP too.
Current unbiased reviews of Windows 7 have not been so good, they all point to it’s high upgrade cost, no support for a direct XP to Windows 7 update install (just the wipe it all and reinstall everything) and slower performance compared to Windows XP. For IT departments and a large number of customers these issues are deal breakers. Vista was bad for IT and user uptake, Windows 7 is going to just as bad or worse. Why replace XP it work… After all Windows 7 is still just Windows Vista with a bunch of updates and fixes. Shit by any other name is still shit.

And Apple isn’t just dropping PPC Mac… Leopard will be updated and moved forward for many, many years. So, for PPC Mac Owners will not losses anything by not being able to upgrade to Snow Leopard, They’ll just save $29.00. Unlike Microsoft that needs the upgrade $$$ for profit $$$.. Apple sticks to what is best for the largest majority of it’s customers and for the advancement of the Mac OS.
It’s clear that Microsoft only rushed to get Windows 7 Out the door because Vista tanked. Windows 7 is still just an updated and fixed Vista and Microsoft is still going to ream the Vista bitches for a full upgrade $$$, I can hear Ballmer now, “Discount it, are you insane we need to maximize profits to fight Google in search advertising. Enjoy that Ballmer fist as you suckers shell out for the patched up Vista that Microsoft has renamed Window 7 and is selling it to you again at full price!! Talk about a Tax, that sounds like a big Windows Tax to me.

  5. Canadians have always been smarter than the Americans. We have done lots of things before the Americans finally caught on but still behind us in many areas due to right wing conservative garble.
So now we broke the double digit, I hope Apple will take another closer look at us, ie more TV shows for iTunes, etc.

  6. Why you guys wasting your time talking to an idiot like Zoe?
Zoe got us off this subject of Canadians being more genius than Americans.
    Zoe must be American.
and the rest of you guys are American arguing with Zoe or Canadians not awake today.
Get with it! Ignore those dumb windoze users!
    Talk Mac!!

  7. Speaking purely as a Canadian CFE (retired) I don’t believe the stats presented in this article. Canadians are no smarter than Americans; and their incomes in real terms are smaller. Apple products are more expensive in Canada than the U.S., and while I have several Apple laptops and iMacs* I don’t know anybody else who does. In the typical stores (BestBuy, FutureShop) the customers at the PC section vastly outnumber those at the little white Apple tables with the teeny tiny keyboards that Apple ships with demo models (leaves a bad impression with customers who never get to see a full size Apple keyboard), a dumb decision indeed. And there are now about 6 Apple stores in Canada, including the one in Ottawa which is full of PC using civil servants.
    * one for my wife, one for my daughter, one for me plus a 17 and 24″ iMac, a 12″ PowerBook. I won’t mention the basement…

  8. “Canadians are no smarter than Americans”

Did you guys ever elect anyone like G.W. Bush?

    Didn’t think so. You’re smarter. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”hmmm” style=”border:0;” />

  9. Apple would only have to send about 35,000 to 50,000 Macs to Iceland or Luxembourg to beat that 10% figure.

Getting back on topic…way to go all of you highly intelligent Canadians!

  10. I’ll never understand the PeeCee pundits. somehow taking a 4-5 year old system, having to add new hardware and buy a new OS and take the full day or two to install is sooo much better than just buying a new Pee Cee that includes the new OS?? In another 2-3 years they will be ditching that old Pee Cee for a new one anyway!!!

Lets face it, old hardware runs new OS and programs much slower than new ones. Technology moves on, and costs money. Get over it!!!
