RUMOR: Apple to release Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard on Friday, August 28

We have received multiple independent tips — some even from trusted sources wink — that Apple plans to release Mac OS X 10.6 Snow Leopard on Friday, August 28, 2009.

Please note that Apple’s official release date has not been announced and the company’s website states, “Mac OS X Snow Leopard is scheduled to be released in September 2009.”

UPDATE: 9:17am EDT: John Gruber over at Daring Fireball is hearing the same date, too.

[Thanks to MacDailyNews Reader “Judge Bork” for the Daring Fireball heads up.]

  1. Having done some testing with an earlier build of 10.6, Rosetta is an optional install. If you try to launch an app that requires it, and it is not installed, you get a dialog asking if you want to install Rosetta. If you say yes, Software Update grabs it and installs it. Once installed, just launch your app. At least in my case, no reboot was required, and installation was very quick- maybe a minute.

  2. Why is it that Apple produces such a following. I love my Saturn, but I don’t drool over the idea of a new feature coming out in next years model. I just don’t understand the complete loss of all major brain functions when Apple starts hinting at new items. It doesn’t make sense, but I too have to admit it happens to me all the time. Strange, very strange.

  3. A week earlier then my guess, I figured they’d announce it on Sept. 1st – 3rd for a Friday Sept. 4th @ 6-9 PM release time.

I still think iPod update announcements will be in the first 3 days of Sept. 1st-3rd with an Apple Special event.

  4. Apple is on a winning streak: just had a coffee with some colleagues, a first one also a long-time Apple man, 2nd one recently switched to Mac (after 2 cheapo computers disintegrating on him in 2 years – and totally happy about his switch: ‘wow what a machine’), and a last one being more and more annoyed with his Winblows turd. The Win guy said that he was actually longing for a Mac but didn’t really know, but when he then heard that we didn’t need/want/use AV software, didn’t have to defrag, format C:, that it simply worked (and yes, it has a browser, and yes you can install other softs, and yes iWork simply opens MS stuff, and yes…) he was totally convinced.
Some years ago I was one of the few Apple-guys in the office here, now more and more people are seeing the value of something that simply works. On my floor I used to be the only one, now over half of my direct colleagues here switched – and they’re all evangelists in the mean time, ‘because it simply works’…
Yes, I’ll hold on to my (few) AAPL shares for some more time…

  5. Richie — the difference is I will get to install a more powerful engine and more response transmission in the Mac that I already own for a mere $29.

It’s not like there’s a new feature in a new model of car that I won’t be buying cos my current car still has a lot of useful life.

  6. It certainly isn’t outside the realm of possibility — especially if Apple are happy with development thus far. Afterall, they can iron out bugs in the 10.6.1 release, much like they did with Leopard.

Here’s hoping we can get Snow Leopard ahead of schedule!
