Apple restores matte screen option for 15-inch MacBook Pro

“Confirming an AppleInsider exclusive tip from less than a month ago, Apple has restored the antiglare upgrade option — at a cost of $50 — for its 15-inch MacBook Pro line,” Neil Hughes reports for AppleInsider.

“The change is a quiet concession by Apple that the glass-enclosed glossy screens adopted by the Mac-maker may not be for everyone,” Hughes reports.

“Previously, only the 17-inch MacBook Pro offered the $50 antiglare option. Tuesday’s change brings the features to the 15-inch line, but the 13-inch Pro model remains glossy-only,” Hughes reports.

  1. And I’ve just been considering moving down to a 15″ from a 17″ machine after 5 years. This thing is heavy and I’ve carried it far enough. Plus I always use it with a second screen at home and at work, it’s only on the move that I fly solo. The weight reduction should be worth it I think..

  2. Halleluiah, indeed! Thank ALL the Gods!

I won’t balk. It beats trying to put one of those anti-glare films onto the screen. I watched a video showing how to apply it … what a pain!

The moral? Apple DOES listen… if we scream loud and long enough!
Apple, DO NOT forsake your CORE USER BASE… the Pros. We stuck with you when you tottered at the abyss!

    Thanks Apple!

@appaulmac… Of all the people I know with 17-inchers, they RARELY move them from their desks. You’ll LOVE the 15″, it’s perfect…. NOW with matte, it’s perfecter!

  3. My guess is that the sales numbers were much more of an indicator than the volume of “whining”. The “whiners” are most often disproportionately louder than their actual share, and the amount of noise they make does not properly represent their actual numbers. It is an extremely unreliable criteria for business decisions.

The actual numbers of machines being sold may be much better of an indicator. Apple ALWAYS gave it 9 – 12 months for an experiment before deciding whether it works or not. G4 Cube lived for exactly 9 months before the plug was pulled; iPhone EDGE lived exactly for 9 months without 3rd party native apps, before SDK was announced. Glossy-only MBP lived exactly for 9 months before matte option was (quietly) introduced.

Still, whiners now have a reason to rejoice and be proud of themselves. I’m sure they’ll be convinced it was their noise that forced Apple to make an about-face, just as all the whiners of two years ago were convinced that it was their whining that “forced” Apple to deliver SDK for the iPhone. I’m sure Apple doesn’t mind if all the whiners really think so high of themselves.

  4. Now how amount some NEW matte Cinema Displays. I have been working on an old 20″er and am DYING to buy a new larger screen (24″ or so) for my 2009 MacPro — but there is nothing available from Apple. C’mon — do I have to buy from another manufacturer? Sheesh!

  5. Ordering one today! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

The years of waiting for Apple to come to their senses is over!

Now I can finally retire my 7 year old PowerBook G4!

To all the morons that don’t think this matters… Get a clue!

  6. Real Macs have FireWire and Matte screens and real Mac users aren’t stupid enough to pay $50 just to get a decent screen.

Apple sold out to the PeeCee switchers who wanted a glossy screen just like their old Vaio- eff that.

BTW- real Macs have REMOVABLE BATTERIES as well. Apple will walk back this one as well.

  7. on my way now to the Apple Store, YAY!! who cares for the $50 ‘tax’, over a lifetime of say 3/4 years the bonus of minimal reflections is so worth it. Just come back from a friend who has the 17″ matte screen, so much more pleasant to use.

  8. Having been in the IT industry (in a large enterprise) for good part of last 20 years, I can confirm that in that many years, we have gone through hundreds, and probably even low thousands of corporate laptops for mobile execs, middle managers and remote staff. Never was a SINGLE extra battery bought for ANY of those hundreds (possibly thousands) of laptops.

I honestly don’t know who perpetuates this myth about the need for a removable battery and why. What business is to gain if laptops had removable batteries? Nobody in their sane mind buys an extra battery only because the computer’s battery is removable. Presumably, the only time they would buy one would be when the original one dies, or if a situation presents itself where that laptop user can’t get to a power outlet for more than 4-5 hours, and desperately NEEDS to use that laptop, or otherwise, there would be dire consequences for himself, his job, or his business. If there ARE people like this, they are ALWAYS Windows people. Even with Macs steadily (re)entering the corporate world, I don’t see this changing anytime soon.

  9. Where’s that super whiner, MacMatte?

No doubt he’s gonna claim full praise for this … and, as others have said, probably start whining about the price.

How about you take down your stupid blog / petition now and actually get a life you whine baby? Pity you’ll never experience the wonders of a glossy screen…

  10. Honestly, the matte 17″ ones are ugly machines, with the silver bezel but the black rubber strip around the edge. Now that I’m used to the glossy, it doesn’t bother me.
