AT&T: We do not manage or approve applications for Apple’s App Store

“AT&T has replied to a Federal Communications Commission letter of inquiry into the role it played in the rejection of a number of third-party Google Voice apps and Google’s official GV client from Apple’s iTunes App Store. The gist of the reply: Don’t look at us,” John Paczkowski writes for AllThingsD.

“AT&T does not manage or approve applications for the App Store,” the company said in a statement. “We have received the letter and will, of course, respond to it.”

Paczkowski writes, “A flat denial, and one that would seem to throw Apple under the bus for denying iPhone owners access to Google Voice. Though just why Cupertino would take issue with an an iPhone application that offers free text messaging and allows users to make calls, routed via the Internet, for free in the United States and for a small fee internationally is unclear. After all, it’s not Apple’s domestic and international calling business the app is potentially encroaching on.”

MacDailyNews Take: Okay, so AT&T “does not manage or approve applications for the App Store.” We knew that already, thanks. About all that AT&T’s statement does is leave us asking if they voice their displeasure over certain apps to Apple or otherwise influence Apple’s App Store management and/or app approvals?

  1. I disagree this is a flat denial. They state they do not manage the app store. Nor do they approve applications. However, no mention whether or not they disapprove apps.

  2. I agree with Jim. AT&T;’s statement is carefully worded, and virtually devoid of meaning. AT&T;may not review apps individually, but they don’t deny that they have required Apple to categorically reject certain classes of apps that threaten AT&T;’s business.

  3. I’m guessing the gist of it is that Apple and AT&T;counter signed a contract when they got in bed together and AT&T;Gould have gad draughted into the contract that Apple would not allow data calls that used their network.

  4. In that case, just approve the app and administer the celebtrated but elusive “Triple Bitch Slap”.

    1) AT&T;for hiding behind Apple when Apple was only looking out for them

    2) Google because they are stupid enough to even make this app available for the iPhone. Making this app exclusive to Android would be one of the very few competitive advantages that their phones would have. If they’re too stupid (or greedy) to see that then they deserve it.

    3) Get Obama’s KGB off your back.

  5. if anything… this whole exclusive thing with AT&T;will end soon. Puleez at least add T-Mobile… They need some competition.

    That whole thing with CDMA and Verizon is one of the most annoying things about the U.S. carriers.
