“Apple [yesterday] unveiled a new, faster iPhone, the 3G S, and cut the price of the currently available 3G iPhone to $99,” Therese Poletti writes for MarketWatch.

“Such a move is likely to spark demand among many consumers who have been on the fence waiting for prices to drop before they will consider buying an iPhone. At $99 the 3G iPhone is one of the lowest-cost smart phones on the market.,” Poletti writes. “At that price, things start to get interesting. The iPhone 3G now sells for $100 cheaper than the two most comparable devices on the market – the BlackBerry Storm from Research In Motion and the new Pre smart phone from Palm.”

The iPhone “is set to become as ubiquitous as the iPod,” Poletti writes.
