Why Apple’s ‘new’ ad campaign is genius, and why Microsoft can’t win

“The most notable takeaway from Apple’s new ad campaign is that it completely ignores Microsoft’s own “Laptop Hunter” advertisements. Instead of chasing Microsoft down the path of absolute cost, Apple is staying above the fray — and taking potshots from above,” Andrew Nusca blogs for ZDNet.

MacDailyNews Take: It’s not a “new” ad campaign. Apple has simply released four new ads in their long-running “Get a Mac” campaign:

Nusca continues, “Simply stated: Microsoft can’t win if it embodies the PC role. Big as the company is, it simply doesn’t control enough of the process to make arguments on behalf of OEMs… If Microsoft wants to make up some ground, it should attack Mac OS X, and leave HP and Dell to assault Apple hardware.”

MacDailyNews Take: Yeah, that’s the ticket.

Microsoft attacking Mac OS X: “Apple’s Mac OS X is too confusing. Is that an ‘X’ like the letter ‘X’ or a roman numeral 10 or what? Stick with Windows. Life without walls. Forget that just such a wall-less life would expressly negate the use of Windows. Uhh… yeah. And this security thing: What fun is it for Mac users to surf the Web with impunity? Where’s the danger? Boooring! And, look, here’s a soccer mom who knows zilch about anything remotely technical saying that she’s a “PC.” And an actress we paid who’s buying one in Best Buy. And a guy who wears headbands. See? Windows is better.”

HP and Dell assaulting Apple hardware: “Thicker is better. So is plastic. And, lights, lots of blinking, meaningless lights! And stickers! Everywhere! And, uhh, tiny off-center trackpads with extraneous buttons and this here upside-down and backwards insecure copy of the Mac OS circa 2001. Built-in card readers? Big, heavy, quick-draining batteries? 57 outmoded ports from days gone by? Don’t forget: We’re OS-limited. Okay, two words: Floppy Drive! Uhhh… hey, we’re cheap! Really, really, really cheap!”
