“An Apple educational newsletter for March 2009 apparently offers a 17-inch iMac starting at $899 as part of the company’s new iMac Line,” The Boy Genius reports.
MacDailyNews Note: Apple’s eNews for Education – March 2009 webpage certainly does feature just such an iMac.
TBG continues, “Currently, iMacs are only available in 20 inch and 24 inch sizes and the re-introduction of a 17″ model leaves us scratching our heads.”
“Once upon a time, there was a 17″ white iMac, available to educational institutions for $899, that was phased out when Apple overhauled its iMac line in 2007,” TBG reports.

MacDailyNews Note: Apple Store for Education’s current entry-level iMac features a 20-inch screen, 2.66GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM – 2x1GB, 320GB Serial ATA hard drive, 8x double-layer SuperDrive, and NVIDIA GeForce 9400M graphics. It costs US$1,149.
However, as MacDailyNews reader “macnut222” reports below, there is an $899 17-inch white polycarbonate iMac (which not shown in the main portion of Apple Store for Education’s iMac home page, but is accessible via a small link (bottom left) which states, “Still available. Find the previous generation iMac.“) available which offers dual-core performance and a range of features, making it the most affordable iMac geared for the digital classroom. Specs include: 1.83GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 1GB memory, 160GB hard drive, 24x Combo drive, Intel GMA 950 graphics (Apple MPN: MA710LL/B).
