Analyst: Microsoft to launch branded ‘smartphone’ in second half 2009

“Analysts from Broadpoint.AmTech on Thursday became the latest to speculate publicly that Microsoft Corp. intends to release a branded cell phone, likely in the second half of this year,” John Letzing reports for MarketWatch.

“Analysts Rob Sanderson and Mark McKechnie wrote in a research note that ‘multiple industry sources are telling us that [Microsoft] is planning to launch a smartphone,’ or a mobile device featuring more advanced functionality and capable of accessing the Internet,” Letzing reports. “‘We do not see this as landscape changing, much like their Zune launch,’ the analysts wrote.”

Letzing reports, “Sanderson and McKechnie are only the latest to publicly guess that Microsoft will release a branded phone, though the company has consistently said that no such effort is underway.”
