Dell’s downgrade to over 7-year-old Windows XP costs $21 more than new copy of Mac OS X Leopard

“Since the introduction of Windows Vista, Dell has been offering a downgrade option to Windows XP for its customers. The deadline for the downgrade option has been extended twice, and at this point costs more than a brand new copy of OS X Leopard,” Aviv Hadar reports for MacBlogz.

MacDailyNews Note: Windows XP was released on October 25, 2001. That’s just shy of 236 years old in “OS years.”

Hadar continues, “TG Daily points out that the Windows XP downgrade option is listed on Dell’s website with the Inspiron 1525 notebook and 530 desktops with a $150 price-tag…. Apple sells brand new versions of Mac OS X Leopard for $129 (single user – family pack is $199). If you’re in a tax-free state like Oregon, that’s exactly $21 less than Dell’s Windows XP downgrade option.”

  1. Truth?

    My record:

Bondi blue iMac and a clamshell iBook from 99 – both run Panther perfectly, but in reality are museum pieces. But still work better than the day I got them.

Titanium Powerbook, 2001, with my daughter at university, no complaints, runnning like a dream.

G5 iMac from 2005, running perfectly since day one. And that was a refurb from the Apple store with a huge discount.

I know that the odd Mac made on the afternoon of Friday the 13th can behave ‘irrationally’.

What I don’t understand is someone like sinclap who has a series of Friday machines. Seems to me it’s the owner, not the machines.

  2. Although I don’t like the negative tone of sinclap’s approach to discussing his problems, he is correct in regard to the quality issues with the iMac G5.

I myself went through similar problems with my machine, and his troubles are supported by Apple’s warranty extension program with these machines. It turns out there was a quality difficiency with a supplier’s capacitors that were used on the motherboard and power supply. It caused the machine to turn off unexpectedly and inconsistantly (try running a business under those conditions). I had both components replaced 3 times in the States and in Denmark before Apple themselves finally declared my machine a ‘lemon’ and replaced it with a new iMac with Intel dual cores. My machine was actually over 1 year out of warranty when this exchange occurred. The replacement was the closest replacement machine available at the time.

The support that I received from Apple was top notch in every respect, and they in no way tried to cover up the fact that I had a troubled machine or attempted to blame my problems with my power feed. They could have easily deflected blame back to me since I was using a transformer converting the 230V used in Denmark to the 110V level used in the States. Unfortunately the original power supply of the iMac G5 was NOT auto sensing and it was not until partially into the PS replacement program they they started using a different PS which did auto sense.

Although the machine troubles was an inconvenience, the experience did not leave a bad taste in my mouth due to the great customer support that I received.

    Other’s mileage may vary…..

  3. Yes, Sinclap is correct that iMac G5 was junk, because it was: power, logic board and video failures and several recalls. PowerMacs G5s were also problematic: cooling system and sensors, not to mention lack of expandability.

  4. @iPhone User
Hey watch what you say there buddy. I get a lot of mileage out of my CB radio! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” /> (really I do)

Cubert, any update on how MDN does their math? The best I can guess is they suppose there are 33.7142857 OS years per calendar year. Or maybe 2.7688687 OS years per month?

  5. Ignore the trolls! Sinclap?… Who? What? Where… ???

Well… BACK TO REALITY! Mac OS X Leopard is simply superior to other existing operating systems! There is nothing else to it! All reviews support this fact. DELL, Microsoft and the likes know it!… Hence the downgrade from the crippled Vista to the decent XP

Apple is still years ahead of the competition! Not 236 worth but endeed many!

  6. I think sinclap is referring to the usability of PCs in playing advanced games, like FPS games or action games like “Too Human” or GTA or Killzone, etc.

Since these games require a full, dedicated GPU and require booting in to Windows anyway, most users who are in to gaming to any extent prefer using Windows PCs, rather than paying more $$ for a Mac with a dedicated GPU.

People who are using their computers for business on the other hand can run 90% of what they need natively in Mac OS X and then for the remainder can run either CrossOver Office or VM Ware / Parallels.

  7. what is the price of the dell machine + windows of similar specs to the mac+leopard?

It seems one of the big problems with adopting osx in the work world is the difficulties with synchronization with windows servers and also user policy enforcement. Short of buying an apple server, there’s a lot of work involved. Whereas, it pains me to say it, the same task is not too difficult with windows server and windows xp. Hence like for xp in the enterprise so it seems.

And realisticaly, if windows 95 was still good enough then companies would probably still use it. In enterprise, computer is a tool and bare minimum, cheapest option that still gets the job done, even if its ten years old, will still get used because there’s no financial imperative to upgrade. It costs to upgrade. WHy pay when you don’t have to? Seems to suggest part of the reason why vista died the death it deserved. There is also a lot of IT people with xp know how (like knowing how to fix a model T in a computer sence) and losing that also costs money. So sometimes what works is good enough. WHile it would be nice to be at the sharp end of the tech edge, for a lot of peoples and companies it isn’t necessary and too, unjustifably. expensive. The idiots at microsh*t should have known that and apple either doesn’t seem to care anyway….the consumer market seems much more lucrative. Smart-> follow the money!

  8. aapl’s cpu choices are to little.

On Dell’s site, you have lots of choices to chose from. Dells i7(intel’s quadcore cpu) studio xp starts at $949.

The iMac 20 screen(junky display) size one are so dated using very old laptop cpu’s and has not been update for so many months. The mini has not been update for almost 1.3 years.

Have had no issues with XP. Looking forward to W7.

  9. sinclap, your comparisons are nonsense, since Dells can’t run OS X, and to say you had “no issues with XP” is absurd, as Windows is nothing but one big issue after issue after issue. You’ve obviously never had to use XP in a mission critical situation, or you would know better. You sound like a young gamer.

  10. Many of you won’t remember this but sinclap has been at his idiot troll game for 2 decades. If any of you were in the atari or commodore scenes back in the late 80’s and early 90’s when such computers were still available it (being sinclap) would hang out in the .advocacy newsgroups for these computers where he would bash both atari and commodore daily, often hovering about usenet all day waiting for a reply to pounce on. He would continually attempt to harass Atari and Commodore users the exact same way he does now. If you dug up his drivel from back then you could substitute Apple or Macintosh for the words Atari or Commodore and his crayon scrawlings would be identical. Ironically he continually made claims of being a Mac user his entire life and that he was “an Apple power rep” though Apple nor any Apple retailer had ever employed him. that much was obvious without checking as he had exactly ZERO apple knowledge and as you well know he still doesn’t. If you fast forward to the late 90’s in one of his rambling idiotic droolfests he made the mistake of claiming “I don’t need no stinking support for my DELL” forever outing himself as the two face lying fool he is today.

This last note is addressed to Petey boy himself. Why haven’t you ever gotten yourself a life? Aside from the obvious S&M;pleasure you derive from having your ass handed back to you with a side of mint sauce.
