Apple’s App Store downloads pass 300 million mark

“You may have seen the Apple advertisement in the New York Times this morning (back page of the Business section) extolling the virtues of the iPhone. Nothing new there,” ” Jim Goldman reports for CNBC.

“If you made it through the fine print, you may have noticed that there are now 10,000 applications available for iPhone and the iPod Touch available on the App Store. Nothing new there, either,” Goldman reports.

“What is new, and absolutely stunning, is the small print at the bottom of today’s ad. Apple now says that iPhone users have ‘downloaded over 300 million’ applications from the App Store, from games to business programs. Why is that stunning? Consider that on the company’s conference call on October 22, Apple disclosed that the following day, Apple expected users to download their 200 millionth app. Which means, as of today, users have downloaded a staggering 100 million apps in just the past 6 weeks,” Goldman reports.

“So all that talk of a ‘bubble’ in apps demand was just that, talk! Experts expected an initial big shot in the arm, and that demand would trail off as the weeks passed by. These figures suggest that the app store is only gaining momentum, and it’s another big reason for users to choose iPhone over Research in Motion’s BlackBerry,” Goldman reports.

  1. I don’t think “bloodbath” adequately describes how scary the predicament is. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”ohh” style=”border:0;” /> I predict the new sales will drive Apple stock down to $20 a share.

  2. Why does everyone think that the app store is for iPhones only? iPOD Touches use the iPhone. At the end of the third quarter Apple had announced 13 million iPhones. But the analysts suggested 10 million more Touches. That is 23 million devices through the end of September. Apple is sold out of Touches at several places near me. If they sell the 7 million iPhones and 8 million Touches in the 4th quarter like projected, there will be 38 million devices by December 31st. No other handheld Internet device is even close. 300 million will probably be 500 million after all of those Christmas presents are opened.

  3. We need some perspective to make this even more staggering. How many apps have been bought for Windows Mobile (and all its previous iterations, such as PocketPC or Windows CE)? How many of them for Palm (formerly the king of the hill of handheld computing)?

Also, let’s hear predictions. When will they hit the first billion?

My guess is, before WWDC in June.

  4. Brothers In Arms: Hour of Heroes is unreal.

I keep thinking, “this is a phone, right?”

    ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” /> Bloodbath.

  5. And I’m looking forward to my Apple TV buying apps too….

The Podcasts being added last month was nice…

but some fun/handy apps hitting my AppleTV will be so cool.

  6. Looking at all my previous email receipts from the App Store, I have been averaging $8.00 per month since July. Very reasonable considering how much fun and satisfaction I am getting out my iPhone 3G! Unfortunately, I am already getting seriously anxious as to what will I do when I fill up my 9th page of apps… I am already on my 7th as of today! <shivers>

  7. “Also, how many downloads were for updates to existing apps.”

Aah, the vagaries of the English language. You can bet that Nokia would include their plug-ins as downloads. My bet is that all downloads were counted, even re-downloads of deleted apps and updates. Too bad it’s impossible to compare to anything else as the other cell makers don’t have app stores (or are just setting one up).

  8. iPod Touch and Things

I’ve had my iPod Touch for about a year and frankly wasn’t using it all that much. Then I started looking at the incredible array of apps that incorporate to-do lists etc. Wow, the selection is amazing.

After trying about half a dozen, I’ve settled on Things by Cultured Code. It is an incredible application that has a brilliant sync capability with a desktop version.

Since using this app, I can’t go anywhere without my Touch. I use it on my boat, in my workshop, around the house, you name it. It has in many respects become my most useful digital tool.

Things for the Mac is still in beta testing and is being launched at MacWorld. Check them out. http://www.culturedcode.com/things/

Why not an iPhone, you ask? I don’t carry a cell phone. Stopped that nonsense a long time ago.

  9. I wonder how many of those are paid vs. free. Apple gets nothing for the free apps, but does bear the infrastructure cost. So far, I’ve downloaded maybe 10 free, one paid (.99). Apple can’t be making money on this, but – like with iTunes in general – it does drive demand for the hardware.

My sister, who has nothing else Apple, just received the 8 GB Touch from her husband. Even *she* saw right away how cool it is.

  10. goobi,

    JM is right!

The iPod touch is selling faster than the iPhone – much faster. It’s going to overtake the iPhone within a few months.

Moreover, in my opinion it’s better.

All apps. are more ‘snappy’ and run more smoothly on the touch.
    (The touch’s processor: 532 MHz
    The iPhone’s processor: 412 MHz)

They had to tune down the iPhone’s processor because otherwise the iPhone’s battery would be flat before lunch. It’s bad enough as it is!
The touch’s battery-charge lasts much longer than the iPhone’s – even with the faster processor.
In addition, you can buy a touch with 32 GB of memory.
And let’s not even start comparing the overall cost!
    The touch wins hands down!
Moreover, the touch is lighter, less bulky and better looking.

Wise people buy a touch and add a cheap, light, and reliable mobile phone.

  11. I don’t think you can compare WinMo and iPhone the same way since you NEED to download apps. I have downloaded very little to my HTC Mogul because, for example, it already views AND edits word, excel, and powerpoint presentations. No need to download and especially not pay for Airshare. And an extra app Sprint or somebody throws in the phone is PocketExpress which has a bunch of multiple iPhone apps built into one such as headlines, sports scores, etc. in one app.

Have to wait for an iPhone to come to Sprint though. Sprint coverage is better and I can never beat the contract I have with them now for data and I also have a program to use for phone as modem which I use a lot and can’t give up right now.

Hopefully one day they will offer two iPhones with different chipsets so I can sign up…

  12. @Muffin Man, Touch doesn’t have an energy sucking 3G radio but it also doesn’t allow you to take a snapshot and instantly email it to a friend or a branch office. If you’re out of WIFI range good luck.

  13. “I don’t think you can compare WinMo and iPhone the same way since you NEED to download apps”

That’s true, the iPhone is so limited out of the box that the only way you can really call it a smartphone is by getting on the app store and start filling in it’s deficiencies.
