“What’s in store for Apple, the holiday season powerhouse over the last several years?” Arik Hesseldahl asks for BusinessWeek.
“Sales of iPods are expected to decline this year from last year. Market research firm NPD’s latest sales figures suggest Apple will sell 18.5 million to 19 million iPods during the quarter ending in December. That would represent a drop of more than 3 million units,” Hessledahl reports. “A lot of those lost sales will be made up by sales of Apple’s popular iPhone device, which does everything an iPod does while also making phone calls.”
Hessledahl reports, “Analyst Bill Fearnley of FTN Midwest said in a research note Nov. 24 that he expects Apple to sell 6.3 million iPhones in the current quarter, matching the total sold since the device’s debut in 2007.”
MacDailyNews Take: Bzzzt. Wrong again, Arik. In fiscal 2007 (ended September 29, 2007), Apple sold 1.389 million iPhones. In fiscal 2008 (ended September 27, 2008), Apple sold 11.627 million iPhones. Add the two together and Apple has sold 13.016 million total iPhone units since the device’s debut in 2007 (Apple sold 6.892 million units alone in fiscal Q408, ended September 27, 2008).

MacDailyNews Take: In the interest of accuracy, BusinessWeek should correct this extremely-easy-to-research mistake immediately. What’s going on over there, BusinessWeek? Very sloppy.
MacDailyNews Note: Arik loves email (he might even tell you that he’s “Ivy League-educated” whether or not you ask): . Also, and more importantly, please contact BusinessWeek Editors here.
Sample message for BusinessWeek Editors:
In the article “‘Tis the Season for LCD TVs: Consumers will be spending less this holiday season, but they’re allocating more of their budgets to home entertainment devices” (http://www.businessweek.com/technology/content/nov2008/tc20081124_035774.htm), Arik Hessledahl is incorrectly reporting Apple’s total iPhone units sold since the device’s debut in 2007 as “6.3 million” when, in fact, Apple has actually sold 13.016 million since the device’s debut through September 27, 2008.
Please correct your error.
Thank you.
[UPDATE: 1:00pm ET: Without acknowledging the article has been updated to fix Hessledahl’s error, BusinessWeek’s article has been changed to read, “Analyst Bill Fearnley of FTN Midwest said in a research note Nov. 24 that he expects Apple to sell 6.3 million iPhones in the current quarter, which would represent a quarter-on-quarter drop of more than half a million units.”]
I predict Christmas sales of iPhone, iPod Mini, U2 iPods and all Powerbook models will be incredibly disappointing.
I would expect the same, but for the fact that we are discussing used or out of production items. As a result, I expect steady growth for all iPod Mini and U2 models through the holiday shopping season.
So much for an Ivy-League education!
Aril is simply upset because he was chewed a new one by MDN readers a few days ago after another limp article.
Where do these clueless idiots get their information from?
They report Apple has slowing sales and most likely never went to their local Apple Store to see for themselves. Or do they not want to know the truth? What is the motive behind their opinion?
I emailed Arik and he just responded that they are going to correct.
We shall see!
Hmm. CNET says 6 mil. Where’d you guys get the stats?
~fails to see the link~
Hey MDN, thanks for putting up the example email. I think last time Aril screwed up, we didn’t help by going all angry fanboi on him. It’s good to see that you’re trying to steer people toward responding more levelheadedly. I think we’ll see better results that way.
Arik, you fsuckup assclown! You are the stupidest, laziest excuse for a journalist I have ever seen.
It’s a shame. He was so good in Knight Rider and Baywatch.
And about that Ivy League thing…. it was a liberal arts major. ‘Nuff said.
HMCIV: “I predict Christmas sales of iPhone, iPod Mini, U2 iPods and all Powerbook models will be incredibly disappointing.”
I tend to agree with you. I think there are more than a few people either hurting or hesitant due to the economy. That should have a huge impact on the upcoming Christmas season.
“We’re fixing.”

Who’s the sucker who ended up with the .016 iPhone. Haha!
“Who’s the sucker who ended up with the .016 iPhone. Haha!”
Epic fail.
Funniest post of the week must go to Sum Jung Gai – ‘so good in Baywatch’
YEAH!
Baywatch was just a warmup for his defining role opposite SpongeBob Squarepants, where he appeared to be at least as brilliant as Patrick. Of course, that was no surprise to those of us who read MDN…
