I’m on your side, but you really should consider the refurb. Decide what you want, then just wait for a deal on it… there are some good ones. You get new case/keyboard/mouse, and everything else is refreshed. Not sure if the battery in notebooks is new or not. But you save a lot of money. Get a refurb older Mac Pro for a great deal. If you need a notebook, wait for a previous-gen 15″ MBPro, or just get the current 17″ now.
There are still options. They’re not a new MBP, but they will work.
And, to those of you who keep talking about those matte films to put on glossy/glass screens: sure, for casual use, but for professional use, they suck, I’ve tried them. So, Jaime, there’s 2 of your options out the window. Still, there are options.
I’m interested in the fact that Apple used “Christmas” instead of “the holidays.” Now, that’s almost as interesting as the supposed deals.

A consumer having a specific need is not “whining”, it is simply that consumer’s requirement.

While not a photographer myself, I do edit video and create 3D motion graphics, so it is fair to say that we are in similar fields wherein the quality of our display is important to us.
Having said that, I have been using a glossy screen for a while now, and have grown accustomed to it. I suspect that you will have to as well, as the time is coming where matte screens on any computer will be considered old school.
You can be as angry about it as you like, but it doesn’t change the reality; glossy screen finishes are starting to replace matte as the default. If it is the glare that bothers you (presumably because you are doing a great deal of field work) then, an anti-glare film is your solution. If it is the increased contrast that gets under your skin, then you just need to put the new machine next to the old one and re-calibrate the display to match the color space you are accustomed to working in.
Bottom line, if you need a new computer, and you can afford it, there is no reason not to. Don’t be stubborn, adapt

Anyone know yet if there is an easy way to connect an LED Cinema display to the mini-DVI port on my black Macbook? I would love to get one if this is not too much to ask.

I recently received the US version of this ad. It’s different from the NZ ad. There’s no mention of Christmas or the holidays, just the “one day shopping event”.
I am a photographer and decided to risk a macbook, its sat next to the old 17inch with matte screen and I have to say the its not as bad as I feared, indeed i have plumped for the new 24 inch monitor as well, lighting conditions in my office mean there are not lots of reflections so its not an issue, but new macbook screen is also so bright that even in strong sun it holds its own.
Apple’s Black Friday sales have always been pretty lame… nothing like any of the huge slashes other stores have to kick off the Christmas season.
I’ve been keeping my mouth shut, but I just gotta say it: Apple’s “sales” suck. They’re not bargains at all. Just a few dollars off. I’ve always been so unimpressed with these Black Friday specials over the years.
Apple, if you’re listening, do us and the economy a favor and offer some real deals. Like a Mini for $399. Or the older MacBook for $699. Just don’t take off $20 and expect me to get excited about it. I know what a bargain is.
What gives with the teaser? How silly is that! Just tell us what the deal is and let us decide if we will part with our money. Enough with the childish games.

I too am in in the “imaging industry” (cinematographer) and use my MBP in the field quite a bit. I would have to tend to agree with Willie G about the glossy screens and also about adapting.
I was much like you before, a matte screen devotee. Now that I’ve been using my new MBP for about a month, I have gotten use to it and I actually prefer the vividness and contrast ratio of the new displays. In fact, there are films that I was watching on the old matte screens that appear a lot less sharp on the new glossy screens.
