Speaking of video…
Does anybody know how to effectively compress video for the iPhone? I am using quicktime pro and use the setting “Export to iPhone” not “Phone 3g” and the converted file end with the same size than the original. Just the extension changes.
Any idea?
If you’re ripping DVDs Handbrake has an iPhone/iPod output setting.
Not that I would ever rip one of my DVDs.
Also. There was a cool one named VisualHub. The Dev just shut his doors but it works fine. I think you could find a version out there now that it is no longer for sale.
What and how is the original Video File encodes?
There are a number if tricks that you can use to encode Video for the iPhone/iPod to make it smaller:
1) down sample the audio
2) reduce the movies’ native viewing size.
3) reduce the number of key frames
4) reduce the frame rate of the video to 24fps
As you wrote the file size remained the same just the extension changed my guess in the MOV file was already MPEG 4 .H264 compressed.
The Elgato Turbo .H264 USB .H254 encoder co-processor and it’s transcoding software does a good job. I also use Visual Hub when I want to get into the nuts and bolts of a transcoding process so I can get the best compression, best sound, best video possible.
@ Demon
You have obviously been awake longer than I, well said.
Thanks all for your comments.
I am riping old home movies from a Sony Digital Camcorder, there were enconde in mpg2 format and MP3 Audio. I did not customised the iPhone exporting setting, but it supposed to decrease it from 640×480 (original) to some below 400 x 320 (the iPhone resolution). I will try customizing the bit rate and audio as you guys recomended.
Final Cut Pro 6.0.2 includes support for AVCHD Full HD formats (full width, 1920 x 1080 pixels, interlaced)
Anyone know if FCE can do that now?
Viktor: Use Handbrake. The new version (just released on the 23rd) now accepts video sources other than DVD. You should be able to transcode your mpg2 & mp3 audio just fine.

This is now my go-to app for iPhone encodes.
