“We’ve been writing a lot recently about Boxee, who develop a powerful media centre application for Windows, Linux, Mac OS X, and the Apple TV,” Jonny Evans reports for Distorted-Loop.
“For Apple TV users, of course, the big news is that after an extensive push by the hard-working developers behind the project, the new version of the software that’s compatible with the recently-software-updated Apple TV 2.3 is available now,” Evans reports.
“Seems not only media-junkies have been paying attention. Boxee recently revealed a $4 million investment from Spark Capital and Union Square Ventures which will see Bijan Sabet from Spark and Fred Wilson from Union Square join the Boxee board,” Evans reports.
“Boxee lets you access content from third-party providers including Hulu, CBS, Comedy Central, or Last.fm using an intuitive and neatly-designed interface. It will play most audio and video file formats and also display images from various sources, including physical media, flash drives and the ‘Net. YouTube, Apple movie trailer and podcasts are also supported, as are image sharing services, Flickr and Picasa. There’s a feast of additional features, including Twitter support,” Evans reports.

This is NOT an upgrade , it is a ssh/ terminal based hack to make it work. It is only for those comfortable with the terminal, it is not the idiot-proof use-a-usb-stick method.

The update is available from the menu on the Apple TV under Boxee/Update.
These guys sure a have a good PR firm. Why mess around with their invitation-only, alpha product when you can get Apple Core, LLC’s ATVFlash right now? The only place I have heard them talked about is on Leo LaPorte’s TWiT Live.

@Sarasota – the USB patchstick creator and XMBC/Boxee is much better setup than ATV IMHO plus it’s free. Boxee is invitation only now to keep the numbers down – if you want an invite I’ll send you one. I’ve tried both and ATV is not worth $50.
I love my AppleTV… I guess it’s not for everyone but I’ve yet to see anything that works better at delivering all of my content (about 1TB of Video, Photos and Music) from a central location. With the added bonus of 720P Movie Rentals, New Release purchases and access to Hundreds of Podcasts it’s a cool product. My Family and I love it.

Can it pal. AppleTV is awesome, especially if you have multiple Macs (and yes, PC’s) around the house. Having access to all the various libraries on all the computers in the house is sweet. Between the AppleTV, the Macs, the Remote.app for iPhone, and the AirTunes on the AppleTV and the Express, it’s a damn cool setup. Especially when friends come over, they can jack their Mac and iPods right into my all-encompassing media solution. My DVD and DVR are separate, and server their purpose too. I mean, you could say that a Ferrari sucks because it doesn’t have a snow plow and 4 wheel drive, but you would just sound like a moron. Oh wait, you already did that.
BoxeeFan – ATV Flash contains Boxee.
Im sorry, but that Boxee is SOOOOOOOO damn difficult to obtain. The invite system, the bootloaders, the errors, the usb compatibility issues, the headaches for non mac users, the breaking once Apple releases updates… I seriously gave up.
