Eight new features to expect in Apple’s forthcoming iPhone 2.2 update

“One of the great things about the iPhone is the regular software updates. Free and automatic improvements are piped, hot and steaming, to your pocket computer,” Charlie Sorrel reports for Wired.

“We don’t know exactly when the next version of the iPhone operating system (v2.2) will arrive, but the leaks are springing fast, and the new OS looks like a useful update — full of new toys,” Sorrel reports.

Here’s what the rumors say so far:
• Google Street View
• Direct Podcast Downloads
• Rating Applications on Deletion
• Line-In Support
• Emoji Emoticons
• Location Sharing
• Safari Tweaks
• Copy and Paste*

*Sorrel writes, “Kidding! You didn’t fall for that one, did you?”

  1. I used to have Palm, later a iPaq (hp’s pocket pc) and then a Black Berry, all of them with copy and paste function…. but they still crap…

P&C;can help, a lot of time I wanted to copy a SMS and paste it on another SMS, but the iPhone gives me so much functionality that I will rather prefer an iPhone with out copy and paste that any other N95 or Bold or any other bad imitation of the iPhone.

  2. I know 10 people that would buy one if they could simply text a photo to a friend. It’s not a big deal for me or my wife but a LOT of people love that feature and won’t sacrifice it for another phone, even an iphone. Just add it Apple!!

  3. For us Europeans, SMS is important. SMS handling in the iphone is to basic for such an advanced device. NO charater count, impossible to forward a message, impossible to delete a single message without deleting the whole conversation, etc. My 6 years old nokia does this quite well!!!! And how about video recording? Is that so difficult to add this feature??

  4. OK, so has Apple actually come out and said why there is no C&P;or MMS. Has anyone interviewed an Apple rep and pinned them down on these issues? I thought that the C&P;was not a ‘priority’, yet are we to believe that the people of the world have just been clamoring for ‘Emjoi Emoticons’ & ‘Rating Applications upon Deleting’? Come on, Apple – do the right thing and stop wasting the time of your developers and get with the frickin’ program.

  5. Could we just make the iPhone 3G work with the various chargers I’ve acquired over the years ESPECIALLY THE DOCK IN MY CAR! The damned thing plays, but won’t charge. My iPod 3G, Nano, and iPhone 2G all charged properly.

Apple somethings aren’t so easy to change.

  6. Nothing on the list is a big deal to me except copy/paste. The rest is just BS. I would rather see:

    Copy/paste
    MMS
Some way to link maps to an address in an SMS
Ability to edit notes on the desktop
Folders for applications (I have about 8 screens of apps and 2 taps is much easier than 6-7 swipes to get to an app I want
Ability to add info from an email/SMS/mms to a contact or calendar

  7. Not one improvement for business users. Until Apple decides to include whole device encryption and better device management via their own solution / intergration with Mobile Device Manager it will stay firmly in the personal usage only state for most large companies who could care less about providing more entertainment options.

  8. I don’t think of Copy/Paste or MMS as a big deal personally, but it sure would sell a lot more iPhones. The secretary at my office is considering waiting for the BlackBerry Storm and the only reason is because of Copy/Paste. I don’t think she’s aware of the lack of MMS.

Maybe Jobs & Co. feel MMS are so small and crappy looking that nobody should use them anyways, but some people’s lives revolve around that, and not everybody has a phone with email capabilities, especially capabilities like the iPhone.

I’m sure they will introduce Copy/Paste, but since it’s taking so long, it’s probably going to be something better than just normal Copy/Paste… We’ll have to wait and see.

I think I’ve talked her into getting an iPhone though…

  9. What’s so big about copy & paste?

How about I want to go to an address in the location field in Calendar or an email, but instead of tapping on the location to get a Google Map or being able to copy & paste it, I have to remember it and retype it.

Not a good thing to do while driving, so usually you have to (or should) pull over to put in the address.

Would be nicer to simply tap on it and have Maps do the rest.

  10. “what’s the big deal about copy and paste?”

or when you want to take a phone number from a web page or email and dial it (when it’s not automatically fomatted so the phone thinks it’s a number) or post a business name or other search from an email into safari or maps.

Forget streetview, do turn by turn mapping!

Forget podcast downloads, that’s the kind of thing you can leave to 3rd party developers.

    Do Copy and Paste instead!

  11. copy and paste is very important. i recently had an address that I wanted to put in the address book that i found on safari. there was no way to get it from the web page to the address book.

there must be something about the memory sharing why apple has decided not to do this. they do not allow multitasking, except for with the music player. is it possible that this releasing of memory from programs preempts copy and paste? i am certain that they could make a clipboard with a protected memory feature that doesn’t get ported over to itunes.

    anyone know…?

  12. I don’t know what the big deal is with SMS and MMS. If you can send email for free on the data network, why pay extra money for a text message? It’s amazing that the smallest user of bandwidth on the cell networks (text messages) costs so much extra money.
