iPhone 2.2 beta 2 features direct podcast downloads, Google Street View

“Apple has given developers a taste of the new iPhone firmware, version 2.2 beta 2, and it includes a host of spiffy new features that are making the rounds online,” Robert Palmer reports for TUAW.

MacDailyNews Take: Whoa, you like to think that you’re immune to the stuff, oh yeah… It’s closer to the truth to say you can’t get enough… Sorry, that just popped up out of nowhere.

Palmer continues, “A tipster shared with us some screenshots of the new firmware, including what appears to be the ability to download podcasts directly to your iPhone (and presumably your iPod touch). This could tidily explain why Apple rejected the Podcaster app last month.”

Palmer also reports that “Google Street View will apparently be available by rotating the device into landscape mode. Public transportation support and directions for walking also seem to be included.”

  1. Does Safari on the iPhone have a status bar to see what the URL of a link is, like Safari on the Mac?

I’m not trying to be difficult; just asking. I don’t have an iPhone, and given the crappy AT&T;coverage in my area, I doubt I will for the foreseeable future.

  2. (*ahem*) Let me try that again… (*sound of cracking my knuckles*)

Exactly If you’re going to link to iTunes, please mark it as such. I’m on a laptop and sometimes, you have to wait a long time for all that horseshit to slog around and bring up the song.

I liked the song though. Reminded me of that video. Too bad iTunes doesn’t offer the video.

  3. I love my iPhone, but I loved it more as version 1.0. This 2.x is SLOW. How about fixing the performance?!! How about keeping Safari from crashing every 5 seconds? How about fixes the bugs like my songs stop playing when a get a new mail – they are only supposed to fade out for the mail ‘ding’ then fade back in, not STOP.

  4. I’m looking forward to this next version, but I’m still mad that they haven’t made the iPhone capable of writing or showing Arabic text. This should have happened a year ago. What does Apple do with the iPhones that they release into the wild in the Middle East? Just hope everyone speaks English?

  5. I didn’t think Copy/Paste was that big of a deal, but today I was walking out of my building and asked the secretary if she has an iPhone yet… She said “No, I’m waiting for the Blackberry Storm, because it can do more stuff… Like Copy & Paste.

I’m pretty sure I convinced her that an iPhone is much more advanced (and better) than a Blackberry, but still… It just shows that the “simple” features (Copy/Paste & MMS) of the iPhone are really detouring the masses.

  6. @qka – yes u can see the URL of a page in Safari by scrolling to the top.

What I really want: forward SMS messages and in the abscence of c&p;, forward phone numbers directly from contacts, email, or SMS.

  7. I use a Blackberry at work and apart from C&P;, the thing I’d really like is a customizable autofill function. In BB I’ve got a whole heap of abbreviations such as ‘t’ =the, ‘n’= and’ etc etc. It saves a heap of time. Does BB have a patent on this or what?

  8. To see the URL of a link in Safari on the iphone, just hold your finger down on the link for a second or two, and the URL will pop up in a little window. Move your finger away if you don’t want to visit the linked site or just release your finger to head on over.

  9. to Macintosh:

Your secretary was surely reciting Blackberry salesperson’s talking points. I don’t know your secretary so I can’t tell if she actually knows what copy/paste does for her on a handheld device, but in all likelihood, she would have never known it was missing on her iPhone.

Regardless of the reasons, RIM will sell many blackberries to potential iPhone customers because of these talking points. And I’m sure Apple is painfully aware of this. I’m curious, since Steve, Phil and Pete took questions from reporters at the Mb/MBP presentation, why nobody took advantage of the situation to ask an unrelated iPhone question regarding copy/paste.

  10. I can’t WAIT to download Podcasts directly on me iPhone… there’s been days where I am in the car and I forgot to download TWiT or something and boom, now I can get it.

I tried out Podcaster and really dug it… but if I don’t have to shell out $$ and keep jailbreaking my iPhone, then that’s even better.

  11. lack of copy/paste has me scrambling for an alternate smartphone as well, and just one year ago I was the biggest iPhone evangelist I knew….silly me.

I suppose now I will learn why the Blackberry enthusiasts cling to their platform.

…and with a substandard IM architecture Apple is running a great risk of some savvy handset maker exploiting that market weakness in a major way. it could happen suddenly.

  12. Even better than downloading, I’d love to be able to stream podcasts on 3g network. Once I listen to them, I really don’t want them anymore. I’d also love to be able to delete the ones I’ve already listened to directly on the phone so when I sync with iTunes they delete from my library. Otherwise, it’s just more housekeeping to delete all that stuff. I have iTunes set to keep all unplayed episodes, but it doesn’t seem to recognize that they were played on my iPhone or iPod.

  13. @PC Apologist
You would rather it worked properly, correct?

I sure certain people involved in MobileMe were eviscerated by the Steve-meister. That would be interesting to watch. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”LOL” style=”border:0;” />
