RUMOR: Apple’s next-gen MacBook to be two-tone: aluminum and polycarbonate

“MacBooks will have black (perhaps other colors – we have only heard black) plastic outer shells. The same type of plastic that is on the backside of an iMac,” Cleve Nettles reports for 9 to 5 Mac.

“The inside shell, around the keyboard and the screen will be aluminum and that one piece structure will be the skeleton of the laptop,” Nettles reports.

“It will be two-tone,” Nettles reports. “Think if a iMac and a MacBook Air had offspring. Thinner than its predecessor. They are going to sell a lot of these.”

  1. In all fairness, this is the design I had invisaged Apple would produce for the new MacBook or whatever their smallest notebook will be called (if they introduce a new product line).

My guess is black and white (with maybe white being available on the higher spec machine like the iPhone), colours at macworld.

  2. If the original rumour about 6 new product codes is correct, and the new 13″ Pro is correct, then colours might not be in the mix.

I am thinking the products shake out as:

    – 13″ MacBook Pro
    – 15″ MacBook Pro
    – 17″ MacBook Pro
    – Black MacBook
    – Silver/white MacBook
    – New MacBook Air (or secret new product)

  3. Maybe that video from this morning is a fake and the front of the screen on the MacBooks looks like the iMac, with glass and a black border. Then the new MacBooks will look quite a lot like giant iPhones, with Black and white shiny round backs and a glass front.

  4. Two-tone?
    Tacky.
    Apple won’t do it.
Not only would it be poor esthetics, but also, Apple’s tasteful, classic designs are another differentiator between Apple products and the desperate Apple-wanna-bees.
See all the ads for custom-design Vaios and Be-An-Individual DELLs?
Apple doesn’t have to market tail fins and plaid keyboards.
Apple can instead concentrate on understated elegance in its designs.

You’re here. You know what I’m talking about.

  5. The MBP will take up six of those new product codes. With each model (Good, Better, Best) available in glossy and matte screens. So in reality, you’ve got six available codes to take up between the MacBook and possibly refreshed MBA.

  6. Sounds a bit suspect, but I never believed the all aluminum MacBook rumors.

If anyone could do a two-tone Mac and make it look great, it would be Jonathan Ive.

Glossy is TACKY! Unless you like the look of gummy fingerprints.

  7. Sounds a lot like the iBooks from a few years ago. While I like the current MacBooks in black, those white + brushed aluminum versions were amazing. I still wax nostalgically about my old dual USB 500 MHz iBook. The design went south afterward, with the change to that off-white keyboard shell that collects dirt so badly…or should I say collects dirt so well.

  8. speculative bs again.

If apple did that, they’d have a lot of complaints about scratching on the polycarbonate casing.

They’re at the back of the imac for a good reason… no point making the macbook like a PC, in other words a blend of metal and plastic….

    it’s all or nothing
