Adobe releases Creative Suite 4

Adobe today announced the Adobe Creative Suite 4 product family which includes Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design editions, Creative Suite 4 Web editions, Creative Suite 4 Production Premium, Creative Suite 4 Master Collection, as well as 13 point products, 14 integrated technologies and seven services.

Adobe Creative Suite Master Collection CS4 combines virtually all of Adobe’s new design and development applications, technologies and services in a single box.

With Adobe Creative Suite 4, customers can choose from six suites or full version upgrades of 13 stand-alone applications, including Photoshop CS4, Photoshop CS4 Extended, InDesign CS4, Illustrator CS4, Flash CS4 Professional, Dreamweaver CS4, After Effects CS4, and Adobe Premiere Pro CS4.

A simplified workflow in Adobe Creative Suite 4 enables users to design across media more efficiently by making it easier to complete common tasks and switch between mediums without leaving a project. InDesign CS4 includes a new Live Preflight tool that allows designers to catch production errors and a newly customizable Links panel to place files more efficiently. The revolutionary new Content-Aware Scaling tool in Photoshop CS4 and Photoshop CS4 Extended automatically recomposes an image as it is resized, preserving vital areas as it adapts to new dimensions. An expanded version of Dynamic Link in CS4 Production Premium enables users to move content between After Effects CS4, Adobe Premiere Pro CS4, Soundbooth CS4, and Encore CS4, so updates can be seen instantly without rendering.

Adobe Creative Suite 4 provides the ability to paint, composite, and animate 3D models using familiar tools. Flash CS4 Professional now offers the ability to apply tweens to objects instead of keyframes, providing greater control over animation attributes. Also in Flash, the new Bones tool helps create more realistic animations between linked objects. With a searchable library of more than 450 dynamically updated device profiles from leading manufacturers, Adobe Device Central CS4 enables users to easily test mobile content designed using many of the Creative Suite 4 products.

Adobe Creative Suite 4 significantly expands access to services* available to creative professionals and developers who want to collaborate online. Adobe ConnectNow, a service of Acrobat.com, can be accessed from InDesign CS4, Illustrator CS4, Photoshop CS4 and Photoshop Extended CS4, Flash CS4 Professional, Dreamweaver CS4, Fireworks CS4, and Acrobat 9 Pro, allowing real-time collaboration with two colleagues or clients. Designers can also share color harmonies with Adobe Kuler, which is now accessible from within InDesign CS4, Illustrator CS4, Photoshop CS4 and Photoshop Extended CS4, Flash CS4 and Fireworks CS4. Other online resources include: Adobe Community Help for technical questions; Resource Central for accessing video and audio product-related news and tutorials, as well as Soundbooth scores, sound effects, and other stock media; and Adobe Bridge Home, a customizable resource for tips, tutorials, news and inspirational content.

Adobe Creative Suite 4 and its associated point products are scheduled to ship in October 2008 with availability through Adobe Authorized Resellers and the Adobe Store.

Estimated street price for the Adobe Creative Suite 4 Design Premium will be:
• US$1799, US$1699 for Adobe Creative Suite 4 Web Premium
• US$1699 for Adobe Creative Suite 4 Production Premium

  1. I agree. As a single independent media creative, this version is getting skipped. Nothing in this suites workflow justifies the $700 upgrade from my CS3. Sounds like Adobe wants to maximize their profits while they rewrite their code for 64-bit Mac CS5. No thanks, I’m not financing that.

  2. What a pile of bloatware.

Luckily, we’re still happily using InDesign CS2 and will be for many years to come.

Automatic pre-flighting? WTF is this? Microsoft have sold Clippy to Adobe? I’ll pre-flight myself thank you very much!!!

  3. Great, thanks Adobe, lets release a new version of your software to replace the old version that never worked correctly to begin with. I hope they at least still put our service updates for CS3 to get InDesign from crashing and Acrobat to stop asking of an Admin password when used with a non-admin account.

  4. You know, reading comments here about CS4 is like reading Facebook users commenting about recent CME activity on the sun.

All I have to do is type ‘Obama sucks’ and we’ll have 3 pages of drivel.
    Cue next comment:
    “@R – you suck you f***ing f***.”

    Seven swans-a-swimming,

    Three french hens,
    Two turtle doves
And a partridge in a pear tree.

Now to register the suite… that’s an entirely different song best left for another day when we have more time.

  6. Man, I don’t know. I know I’ll watch their presentation and get excited, but shelling out another $600 for the upgrade doesn’t sound good to me. It seems like CS3 just came out a couple months ago. Sorry Adobe, I just bought a new car and have a new baby coming in four months. I don’t think I’ll be giving you $600 any time soon.

  7. “Automatic pre-flighting? WTF is this?”

It sounds handy and pretty cool actually.

“InDesign now includes Live Preflight, which alerts users to potential problems in real-time. Thanks to those alerts, users can correct any errors while still in the design process, instead of going back to fix errors after everything has already been laid out.

A new Preflight panel shows what is going on and makes suggestions to fix any issues found in the document. InDesign gives users the option to monitor Live Preflight on a page range or for the entire document.

Michael Ninness, Adobe’s InDesign senior product manager, said that preflighting in InDesign is also extensible, so designers can write custom profiles and share them with the team to ensure consistent output.”

Also of interest is content-aware scaling, nondestructive corrections in the Adjustment panel a new Tabbed interface (including ID CS4, finally) as well as Pixel Blender for applying faster special effects in an upcoming update from Adobe Labs.

I’ll read the reviews first before tossing out judgement on the value of a Suite upgrade. Also, the DW CS4 beta has been quite an improvement over CS3 in workspace setup, overall speed and faster real previews.

  8. Bug Report:
“When you launch a CS3 application, Adobe’s act is not together.”

    PROBLEM:
Unable to put act back together in CS3 apps.

    METHOD:
    1. Launch Internet Explorer 7.
    2. Create anonymous identity on news aggregation site.
    3. Enter the following text:
“It’s a joke. A hideous, bloated, featureless joke. I’m a graphic designer and I will NOT be updating until Adobe gets their fucking act together.”

    RESULT:
Adobe does not reply to you, because their act is not together.

    EXPECTED:
I expect Adobe’s act to be together. They have put their act together in the past, but now it is apart. Cannot re-load application due to pirated serial number failing activation. Cannot form problem statement due to lack of education and imagination. Cannot find happiness due to personality defects and years emotional isolation.

    WORKAROUND:
Contact (wait for it…) Adobe. Not MDN.
