“Apple watchers have shifted their attention to the products that matter most to the company’s bottom line: the MacBook and the increasingly long-in-the-tooth MacBook Pro,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune.
“Macs represent more than 48% of Apple’s quarterly revenue these days and MacBooks account for 62% of that,” Elmer-DeWitt reports.
“Sales of Apple’s laptops have been on fire lately… On Wednesday, NPD reported that Apple’s share of the North American notebook market grew from 6.6% to 10.6% over the past year — a 60% increase that easily outpaced market leaders Dell (up 1.4%), HP (up 0.9%) and Acer (down 22.6%),” Elmer-DeWitt reports.
“Which makes it all the more surprising that Apple has waited so long to spruce up its notebook line… Well that’s all supposed to change on Oct. 14, when the long-awaited revamped notebooks are due to be introduced, according to sources said to be familiar with Apple’s plans,” Elmer-DeWitt reports.

But … what about The Brick? We don’t even have a solid clue as to what that reference alludes to! I’m kind of hoping it’s a midi-tower, a headless model halfway between an iMac and a Mac Pro. A single four-core CPU, room for 8GB of RAM and an extra HD, but not nearly the industrial strength power of the Pro.
Ooo! Ooo! First! (yay, me)
Hey aapl, how about a little stock repurchase program right about now!!!
The shares are on sale!
Yes I too want to know more about this “brick” mystery product. What could it be? =/
The brick.. That’s just a locked iPhone
@DLMeyer
If you’re going to call it, call it in the first post. Don’t wait until you’re sure. Be bold.
I think the brick will be a redesigned power adapter to match the newly redesigned macbooks or a mac mini upgrade. Anything revolutionary will be saved for a macworld.
Brick is the new mini!!!! or maybe a small netbook, doubtful.
The “brick” is a home server device.
Just realized I’m going to be in S.F. on October 14. Any ideas of how to get into the presentation if it’s at Moscone?
Bring back the Cube!!!
(like you guys couldn’t see that one coming)
Enough with the rumors already…
I got your rumors right here…
goddess, anyone who types as slowly as I do, and who is so in love with the look of his words on the page, would have to be crazy-bold to make such a call! Even if I’m the first to start typing, I’m seldom the first to click “Submit”.
Why has nobody commented on the obvious reference to “Car 54, where are you?” … too young? Too sophisticated? Lost too many brain cells? Refuse to admit you ever watched such drek? ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
I want a tablet.
sure, mister Elmer-DeWitt we all know your “sources said to be familiar with Apple’s plans”: the rumor-sites we all love. it amazes me that nowadays all these bloggers claim to have some insight when all they do is producing posts about rumors.
mdn word “look” as in: look how far we’ve come.
FORGET THIS, I WANT MY FSCKING POWERBOOK G5! THIS INSTANT, BIACHES!
Crunch ‘n’ Munch. Cos life is sweet and a little bit crunchy. ®
I vote – “brick” is a home server device.
The price of the MacBook is going to be the big story (I hope). I want to see a $899 low end model. Similar specs to the current one, with a faster processor and a new form factor (metal).
Apple have alluded to this already in their comments about future margins.
The brick could be a revamped mac mini. If they dropped the price by $100 and allow it to run the AppleTV program then it could sell.
i have found a leaked photo of the brick!!!
“i have found a leaked photo of the brick!!!”
No. That’s a block.
if sales are really going that well it doesn’t seem all that important to bring out new computers, especially at lower prices.
My guess is similar – some home entertainment all-in-one server:
Brick = MacMini with more CPU + Time Capsule + Airport Extreme + AppleTV + App Store games for big screen + iPhone remote control + magic-dust combined… Your entire house will be Apple-enabled and sync with all your other Apple devices plus the Mobile cloud.
The MS/Sony/Nintendo/Netflix/Amazon/Best Buy home system will be left in the dust.
And Apple is introducing new laptops just in time for the Christmas buying season.
I’m holding out for the MacFrisbee Pro, the multi-touch computer which is easily passed to your family and friends. I heard a rumor they’re working on it.
“if sales are really going that well it doesn’t seem all that important to bring out new computers, especially at lower prices.”
exactly, rest on your laurels, don’t press your advantage, wait until the others catch up so that you take a well deserved break…..
and, as a stock holder, allow me to add, thank the gods you don’t work there! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />
I hope the ‘Brick’ is a new kind of Mac mini. The MacBrick.
