5 reasons why Apple’s Safari beats Google’s unimpressive Chrome

“I’ve been trying out Chrome since it came out and I must say I’m unimpressed. I don’t really care whether Google releases a Mac version or not. We already have the best browser in the world, and its called Safari,” Hadley Stern writes for AppleMatters.

Without any further ado I present my 5 reasons by Safari Rocks Chrome.
1. Because it runs on a Mac
2. Because it is what Steve uses
3. Because Google is going to track everything
4. Because it is better
5. Because it already uses WebKit

Stern explains his 5 reasons in the full article here.

  1. Am I the only one using Opera? I LOVE Opera because it:

    – Remembers all my tabs when I relaunch it
    – Can zoom in effortlessly
    – one-click bookmarks on the left side of the window
    – is unbelievablely fast!
    – has a built-in torrent (so I don’t need bittorrent)
    – has a built-in RSS reader

    It’s a pity more people haven’t tried it…

  2. BTW, these are incredibly stupid reasons:

“2. Because it’s what Steve uses” !!!??? Hello? Is that REALLY relevant?

Number 1 will soon be moot.

Number 4 is subject and COMPLETELY unsubstantiated. “Na Na, my browser’s better than your browser.” I mean, come on- how old is this guy? In the actual article he complains about how Chrome so unpolished (pardon the pun). But really, it’s essentially in Beta. Do you really think that Safari 0.8 was any better?

Number 5 is as rediculous- who cares about WebKit- we only care that a browser works well and fast. I could care less what the engine is…

These arguements are childish and superficial. Surely someone can do better than this?

Only number 3 is legit. A strong point, but, IMHO, the only real point he makes…

  3. Chrome has has some really good features. It sucks that they don’t have it for mac yet.

You know what would be a really cool feature they could add to Chrome? Adding Firefox’s gecko rendering engine, and the ability to easily switch between webkit and gecko. As a web developer, it would be great to have one browser that can test websites with multiple rendering engines.

  4. Google once trounced Microsoft for trying to control the world of technology. Make no mistake, folks: This new Google is trying to do the very same thing by monitoring every move we make on the web and through the air.

    Big Broogle anyone?

  5. I do prefer safari over all but come on??? Can they really be serious? Chrome JUST came out and its STILL just BETA. Most likely safari will still be better but come on you have got to be kidding me.. Things must be slow out there so they decide.. lets state the obvious here and compare a browser thats been out for years vs a beta browser that just released.

  6. I don’t like Chrome either, but those are lame “reasons.”

My main reason is perhaps shallow, but I think it’s the ugliest browser by far that I have ever seen (with the exception of maybe Netscape 3.0.)

The way that those gigantic ugly tabs with the slanted sides take up the whole top of the browser is really unforgivable. It looks like it might have been written in Java in 1995.

  7. One of my problems with Chrome is that it looks styled with css. It looks like a web-designers attempt to mimic an applications gui. The future of the web to me is things like the iTunes store. Essentially everything in it is from the web, without it the thing wouldn’t work, but it’s styled like an app, it has that solidity to it that purely webpages don’t buying something from iTunes feels more secure to me than buying something from Apple’s online store – purely because of the interface and environment of the app. If they’re trying to advance the web surely they should be trying to bring the power of our desktop environment to it and using the web to supply the data which powers our apps.

  8. MacMan: regarding #1 on your list — “Remembers all my tabs when I relaunch it” — Safari 3 now has the menu item “Reopen All Windows From Last Session” under the History menu.

Also, I couldn’t live without SAFT all this time for Safari. Not only does it automatically remember all your tabs when you relaunch it, it has crash protection — it remembers all your tabs after a crash.

I used OmniWeb but converted back to Safari when Tiger was released because it took awhile for an OmniWeb update. I know with Safari, it will always be updated and work with a new OS upgrade.

So the Safari-SAFT combination works for me. Sure, a new version of Safari always breaks an older version of SAFT, but a quick detour to the website, and the developer already has a new compatible version waiting for you to download.

  9. So … many of us agree – even Mac weenies can be majorly brain dead and still get “published”. Now … I LIKE the idea (at least) of Chrome and wouldn’t mind seeing it on a Mac near me. Will even try it out when it’s available. And I don’t think that Safari is “perfect”, which is why I keep Firefox around as backup. But reason #3 is the only one given that makes sense! “Because Google will be tracking you” rings major warning GONGS for many of us. The rest of it? meh!

  10. Just about all competition to Apple is not tolerated by Apple customers.

Competition to Apple that is tolerated:

    Google for Windows: 6%
    Google for Mac: 4%
    Yahoo: 1%
    Amazon: .5%
    Microsoft: -9000%*

    * MS automatically owes something to Apple’s customers, whether in competition with Apple or not.
