RUMOR: Apple to debut new MacBooks on October 14

“Apple has become the fourth biggest laptop manufacturer in the US – even as strong rumours predict the company will refresh its laptop range at a special event on October 14,” Jonny Evans reports for Macworld UK.

“Daring Fireball’s John Gruber last night claimed an insider source had let him know to expect the company’s new range of Mac laptops will be introduced at a special event on October 14,” Evans reports.

“Speaking of Macs, contrary to speculation, there were no announcements regarding new Mac notebooks. Such speculation was misguided; Apple has held an iPod/music special event in September or October every year since 2001, and, to my knowledge, has never once used such events to announce new Mac hardware. Those of you holding out for a new lineup of MacBooks will have to wait until October 14, according to sources who, as they say, are familiar with Apple’s hardware plans.”

  1. Okay. new MacBooks and, one would assume, MacBook Pros and maybe a speed-bump for the MacBook Air. There are new 1.8″ 240GB 4200 rpm hard drives available, too.

What about the Mac mini? I know a few people who are dying to hear about an upgrade, which is LONG overdue!

  2. From the Article: “It also reveals that Macs are being purchased as second or third computers in many US homes.”

This is huge. Once everyone in the house starts wanting time with the Mac and shunning the Windows machines, the family won’t buy another Windows PC… they’ll buy another Mac!

  3. That string of puns was almost Ampar-esque…

IMacs will have to wait until MacWorld. For them, a year and a half is a reasonable refresh cycle, and alu-iMacs arrived in August of last year. As for the Mini, it’s a step-child. Whether it will see any changes is a big question. The way it’s treated, they may just announce a refresh online, without a special event.

I’ll be sure to tell Nick to try harder when I see him again.

  5. “Macboob”

Tits a shame if they’re thinking of integrating a nipple mouse. Those things are a bit creepy but this market could be a treasure chest if they stay abreast of consumer needs. They could milk this for awhile.

    Suck it and see!

  6. Steve Jobs doesn’t like the Mac mini… we will never see any major upgrades for the Mac mini. If they do ever get refreshed at all, they will be very minor upgrades that will be silently upgraded on Apple’s website.

  7. To Luc Scholte van Mast:

It’s been tit for tat. I’ve been enjoying the cleave between opposing views on this site. Some of them are udderly ridiculous but they do bring back some great mammaries of the past.

  8. Apple may have missed the back-to-school boat by delaying the intro of new MacBooKs until so late. But, there’s another season hard on that one’s heels, one with a larger target audience. Why should “Dad” buy his “son” a newer computer than his own when he can buy it for “Mom” instead – then “share” it.
Sorry … my wife just kicked me off her AluMac and I’m moping on my G5. <sigh> 🙁

  9. OK Ampar, “next time you seen Nick”, yeah I get it, wink wink, nudge nudge, (going for a comma usage record here) you guys are two different people and all that, you know, secret-type clandestine, undercover, Burn Notice™, Clancey, Ludlum, Le Caré-esque, Mission Impossible in the chat room, just-who-is-this-really thing.
