“Dedicated runners, bikers, hikers, and walkers like to keep track of their efforts, dutifully logging miles (or kilometers), time, weather conditions, elevation gain or loss. That’s why there was a lot of excitement after the Nike + iPod Sport Kit was announced in 2006, since the same device you were using to listen to music could be used to tell you just how far and fast you ran,” Steven Sande reports for TUAW.
“When the iPhone 3G arrived this summer, I wondered how it would work as an exercise tracking tool. After all, the device has GPS built in and should be able to accurately measure distances, time, and even elevation,” Sande reports.
Sande looked at:
• Trailguru
• RunKeeper
• The Running GyPSy
• iTrail

Running freaks!
Okay, I’m one of them…currently training for the Berlin Marathon…running out of time…only 25 days left.
Good luck, Ragarcia!
The highest rated one is free on the App Store. No doubt, worth a try!
Anything other than Nike!
In my experience, Nike makes crap.
What’s wrong with Nike? I haven’t tried the iPod + Nike combo but do to extra wide feet and the comfort of the Nike Air line I haven’t worn anything but them since they came out. Enlighten me…
What about Trailrunner?
Isn’t the iPhone a tad clunky to be lugging around in your jogging shorts?
try Asics… a far better shoe, i like Gel Kayano personally, fyi i also used to like the nike air line but they lose support too fast and fall apart with little wear…

re: able archer
Thanks for the tip. I have found Nike to wear out rather quickly but historically haven’t found anything that comfortable. Thanks again.
These applications are very cool, but where do you actually put the iphone? It seems like everything meant for runners has some sort of a strap or something so you don’t have to put it in a pocket. I’m guessing that’s covered by the Nike kit?
One thing that hasn’t been mentioned is safety. With all the stories of joggers that go missing, could this be used to help authorities find someone they’re looking for?
