Apple’s ‘Let’s Rock’ event invitation fuels speculation about new iPods

“Apple Inc. plans to host a special event next week, feeding speculation that it may release updated models of the iPod media player to spur holiday sales,” Connie Guglielmo reports for Bloomberg.

“An invitation for the Sept. 9 event in San Francisco, sent today, is entitled ‘Let’s Rock’ and shows a silhouetted dancer holding an iPod below a ‘playing soon’ banner,” Guglielmo reports.

“Chief Executive Officer Steve Jobs has held events each September for the past four years to introduce new iPods, which play music and videos. Lower prices, smaller models and more storage may bolster Apple’s product line in the December quarter, its biggest sales period. Last September, Jobs introduced the iPod Touch [sic], a touch-screen model that surfs the Web,” Guglielmo reports.

“‘It’s critical that they introduce the latest and greatest’ to stimulate holiday orders, said Gene Munster, an analyst with Piper Jaffray & Co. in Minneapolis. ‘We just thought it was going to be an updated version of the iPod Touch, but they may have something even more interesting to show,'” Guglielmo reports. “Jobs, 53, may offer higher-capacity versions of its slim Nano players and cut the price of the 8-gigabyte iPod Touch to $199 from $299, said Munster, one of 27 analysts surveyed by Bloomberg who recommend buying Apple’s shares.”

“The iPod accounted for 22 percent of revenue last quarter, with Apple’s Macintosh computers and the iPhone making up most of the rest,” Guglielmo reports. “While the invitation suggests that next week’s announcements will be music-related, Apple also is expected to update its MacBook notebooks before the end of the year, Munster said. The Mac computer accounts for almost half of sales.”

  1. “feeding speculation that it [apple] may release updated models of the iPod media player”.

Speculation? No, you think? I’m speculating that Apple will release nothing new.

“Ladies and gentlemen, I called this media event to announce nothing new at this time. Thank you very much for attending and have a good day”.

Where can I get a Bloomberg subscription? They really put themselves out on a limb this time!

  2. @SouthRoad

I wonder what would happen if someone actually tried to do that (maybe sneak into the meeting and just before it officially opens walk up to the podium looking all official and make that announcement, then walk off before security can tackle ya) ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

Sounds like something that SNL or MadTV would do as one of their skits. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  3. Dang it. I wish Microsoft had already introduced its new Zune so that Apple could demolish it yet again with new features and new price points.

Come to think of it, Apple will do that anyway.

Oh well, my loins are already quivering for the new iPod touch.

Hopefully with GPS and microphone/speaker & VOIP

  4. @winston… funny!

Sad though. Don’t forget you’re talking about the American media. Remember they tried to kill him last week when there just wasn’t enough bad news to go around.

We’re talking the likes of CBS, ABC, NBC, CNN, MSNBC, The Los Angeles Time, The New York Times, AP, Reuters… it’s an exclusive circle jerk group think mob. If Steve walked out looking totally buff all you’d hear from them is “Rumors of Steroids.”

Notice I left out FOX. Mostly because it’s a EGAMI RORRIM of all the others. Same crap, only in reverse.

  5. I still say I want to see Steve come out in a fat suit saying, “There….you happy now?”

Definitely expect ipod changes….not sure new models are needed, but price changes are very likely.

Not sure about other product announcements….maybe a macbook pro refresh/update, or announcement of upcoming quad core models?

Oh, and I love the Al Bundy idea…
