Apple iPhone: 8 million total units so far

“On Saturday, Aug. 30, the daughters of ‘BillH’ bought an iPhone at an AT&T store in Sunnyvale, California… In a joint project of AFB and Investor Village’s AAPL Sanity board, several members have been collecting the IMEI (International Mobile Equipment Identity) numbers of every iPhone 3G they can get their hands on and recording them on a big Google speadsheet here,” Philip Elmer-DeWitt reports for Fortune.

“By tracking the sequence of IMEIs, they can now say, with a fair degree of certainty, that as of Aug. 30, when BillH’s daughters bought that phone, Apple had manufactured at least 5,649,000 iPhone 3Gs. Added to the 2.4 million first-generation iPhones the company reported it had sold in the first six months of 2008, that means that Apple has manufactured more than 8 million iPhones this year,” Elmer-DeWitt reports.

“It seems likely that Apple will build — if not sell — its 10 millionth iPhone before the end of September,” Elmer-DeWitt reports.

  1. Well la-tee-freakin’-da. Hey MAC sheep lets see where the ZunePhone will be a little over a year after it is launched before we get all excited about your one button wonder. Windows Mobile 7 and brown Zune Socks will make everyone forget there ever was a dumpy I-Phone.

    Your potential. Our passion.™

  2. Here is another great quote by Peter Fader at the Wharton Business School who I saw was recently quoted about the iPhone:

“I think that when this phone actually hits the market, some of the grand visions that Steve Jobs has as well as some of the Apple zealots are going to be rather disappointed.”

Having made that statement and other great ones like this too:

” Apple seems to be moving away from that (Macs) and they’re becoming kind of a cute, cool gadget company. And, oh by the way they have a few computers over there as well.”

    Classic.

  3. 10 million is looking like an easier goal everyday. They will have to up it for next quarter now. With Best Buy stores, Russia this month and Christmas in sight, this number is going higher!

With 40 million a year production, Apple will have 13.3 million more made this year. So, 8 and 13.3 is 21.3 million or about 20 million by year end. With 40 million next year!

  4. You confirm with your statement: – “Don’t bother me. I’m busy doing my 14th restore of my 3G iPhone this week” – what we already know – you are plain hopeless with IT.

My suggestion is you keep away from it – much less comment on it.

  5. I wouldn’t be so wildly optimistic, guys. Let’s not forget; last year, if you wanted to get someone an iPhone, you’d buy the $400 device and stuff it in a sock (or wrap it and put it under the tree). If they like it, they activate, sign the contract and they’re good; if not, they return it, get store credit and buy something else.

However, this year, if you wish to buy an iPhone for someone, you’ll have to sign a two-year contract upfront. Not nearly as many iPhones will be sold as Christmas gifts if the contract has to be signed before leaving the store.

On the other hand, I’m sure both Apple and AT&T are aware of this and will figure out a way for people to give the gift of iPhone without having to pay for the plan upfront as well.

  6. @John Crawford,

Have you tried Backing up, or updating your Apps?

My iPhone works fine with Apps installed, but backups take upwards of 6 hours and updating Apps has led to Apple logo of Death more times than I can remember.

  7. @Jamie

Yes. I’ve backed-up both and updated apps on both.
It’s slow – don’t know how long it took, but I sat through it out of curiosoty first time. Second time I just left it/them to come back later.

  8. Dudes..if your phone is causing you problems…then maybe something is wrong with the hardware.

It is under warranty….take it back to the shop and get them to replace it.

8M in 8 months is cool. Apple have ramped up well, but there are bound to be a few duds in that mix.

Apple’s revenue #s are going to be interesting. Most of those 5-6M iPhones were sold in this quarter. Even at an ASP of $300 a piece that makes for 1.5B revenue. If the ASP is more like $600 as has been reported, we’re talking about $3B from the iPhone alone.

  9. I’ve got about 70 apps on my iPhone 3G, as well as my original iPhone. No probs whatsoever. If you are having trouble, try a full restore, and reboot the phone after loading new apps. Also, don’t download apps direct to the iPhone, do it thru iTunes.

  10. Let’s hope Apple gets serious about iPhone for Enterprise. I had to give up my iPhone for a Company provided phone after my last promotion and I am now stuck using Windows Mobile on a horrible HTC Slide phone. There are so many third party apps that iPhone does not support and therefore the iPhone is unable to be adopted in most Enterprise environments. Believe me I have been pushing buttons to allow me to use an iPhone, but no luck. It is important to note that when I contacted our IT Dept they said that the iPhone question was their number 1 question from employees. If Apple will provide better support for third party Apps, everyone in my Company would be using an iPhone. Here’s hoping the iPhone 3.0 software will open up the iPhone for more big businesses.
