Aussies switching to Macs at faster rate than almost anywhere else

“Australians are switching to Macs at a faster rate than almost anywhere else in the world,” John O’Brien reports for Th Courier-Mail.

“Research firm Gartner’s latest figures show Mac sales grew 52 per cent in the second quarter – nearly six times the rate of the PC industry overall,” O’Brien reports.

“This is even better than in the US, where Mac sales have been growing at about three times the industry average,” O’Brien reports.

“Apple’s share of the Australian computer market in the second quarter of 2008 was 5.3%, according to Gartner, up from 3.8% a year ago. Rival research firm IDC puts the present figure as high as 6.2%,” O’Brien reports.

“If Mac sales continue to grow at this rate, the platform will have a double-figure market share within a few years,” O’Brien reports. “In the US this will happen even sooner, with the Mac’s market share topping 8% in the latest quarter.”

Obviously, Apple should maintain – and even intensify – their focus on Australia.

  1. Jeez, I knew I’d been responsible for at least 10 people changing to Macs over the past couple of years, but I didn’t know I had so much influence nation-wide! Seriously, it’s so hard to get people to even consider a Mac for their next PC upgrade, most just don’t want to go outside their comfort zone. Oh well, at least all of those I’ve influenced are very happy with their decision go Mac.

  2. You think I’m going to be playing WoW on an iPhone (or Civ V, or Diablo IV, or …) … well, forget it. No way, no how. I use my wife’s 20″ screen when it’s available, my own 17″ when hers is not, else I don’t play. And, just in case you think that’s ALL I do on our Macs, I’m not going to edit a podcast in GarageBand on an iPhone either. While it might be reasonable to assist other casters or web designers on forums like this one – except more civil – nah … not that, either.

  3. I never thought I would end up buying a Mac, and here I am with on at home. So why I did it? Simple reason — Vista. I needed a new operating system — and Microsoft refused to support XP — and forcing OEM companies not sell it, safe for Dell & HP. And when I buy XP base machine I’d also be paying for Vista license. Thanks for no thanks.

    My solution: Got myself Mac-Mini.

  4. Real reason I can tell you…

owe. Cause the ADMIN in AUSSI has been SO CRAP in last few years Apple is now sorting it out. I have worked there in Applecare under the dusty, grey heavy management in Sydney office of ideakill HQ.
But now Apple seem to be more proactive in Australia with marketing, shops etc, I was fired from Sydney I think cause I was OK at my job.

  5. Macs had a pretty low market share a few years back in the “Dark Days”, and very limited retail exposure.

Sensibly, they’ve loosened up on who can sell the things and you can now find them in assorted electronics stores. So more people can touch them and play with them. And the iMacs just feel and look nice to casual passers by.

  6. @raving,

“Yea it’s comments like that why HP (a former printer maker) is now selling more PC’s than Apple.”

HP has been making computers a lot longer than they’ve been making printers. They also had a head start on Apple of several decades.

But, being charitable here, ravingmaniac apparently has some little problems with doing homework.
