Abilene Christian University giving all incoming freshman Apple iPhone 3Gs or iPod touches

Victor Godinez blogs for The Dallas Morning News:

Approximately six months after Abilene Christian University announced its intent to bring mobile learning devices into the classroom, every member of the freshman class will be presented with an Apple iPhone 3G or iPod touch this weekend. This deployment to more than 950 students marks the first time that a university has introduced these mobile devices as learning tools on such a large scale.

These new ACU Wildcats will begin their mobile learning experience Aug. 16, using the latest in mobile technology for everything from class schedules and maps to in-class, real-time surveys.

During the launch weekend, ACU also will host a number of Apple Inc., AT&T and Alcatel-Lucent representatives, as well as those from other technology industry leaders.

  1. ACU is my Alma Mater! Yeah, GO WILDCATS!

No really, if you haven’t seen the video of the program, go to ACU’s iTunesU page and download it. It really looks like a great program. Wish I had it when I was in school.

(by the way, ACU has the best Undergraduate Physics program int the country.)

  2. This is the work of the devil. Clearly someone connived with Satan to get mere kids hooked on these technologies from hell. MAC is a false god and its users are self-serving fanatical cultists. You don’t see this in the wonderous and magnificent Windows world. Zunes and Motorola Q’s would have been the righteous choice.

How the once good people of Abilene Christian University have been swayed to the dark side is beyond me. I pray for their souls. There’s always Jesus Camp.

    Your potential. Our passion.™

  3. @Cubert

You realize that that was a very bigoted thing to say right? Not all Christians are bible thumping creationist.

By the way, you find another undergraduate physics program that will encourage ALL of their students to work in research projects like this: http://www2.bnl.gov/bnl_phenix/. (I worked here during the summer of 2005, and wrote code for a data filtering program. Filtered $78 Million worth of data that summer.) Or another undergraduate pre-medical program that has a 95% placement for FIRST choice of medical schools.

Yeah, and we also have Bible classes.

  4. It would be nice if these students were being handed 10″ Mac multi-touch tablets with WiFi and built in HSDPA rather than mere toys.

Perhaps Apple will see the potential after experiments such as these.

  5. @dallas,
Not bigoted – just funny. I make jokes about anyone or anything regardless of race, religion, color, or creed. I’m an equal opportunity bigot, therefore, not one.

  6. You know Zune Thang you are treading into waters that can be very consequential for you. First there are human laws and it is Microsoft that has been shown to be a convicted monopolist.

Then there is the bible and it clearly states there: The Gates of Dell shall never prevail.

Feel free to keep casting stones though, it is creating a nice hole for you.

  7. “You realize that that was a very bigoted thing to say right? Not all Christians are bible thumping creationist.”

maybe not all, but they sure are either a majority or a very loud mouthed minority…..

…enough that they have presidential candidates dancing to their tunes.

a group the world would be better without.

  8. non-creationist christian…
“Trust me, loud mouthed minority, not a majority.”

Who cares. A loon is a loon is loon. A loudmouth is worse… AND irritating!

    Example:
I was riding a crowded subway train a year or so ago. Some Xtian nut decided to start preaching. 99% of the people on the train tensed up and started rolling their eyes.

I was pissed and told the guy to STFU. A clump on people asked if I believed in their god. “What difference does it make, the guy is annoying.” They didn’t seem to understand that there’s NOTHING worse than being stuck on a train with one of the self-annointed foaming at the mouth.

ALL fundamentalists are dangerous… whether Xtian, muslim, jewish, whatever… Unfortunately, I see, hear and SMELL em all in NYC! Please go away.
