Steve Jobs says MobileMe launched too early, not up to Apple’s standards; puts Eddy Cue in charge

“In an internal e-mail sent to Apple employees [last] evening, Steve Jobs admitted that MobileMe was launched too early and ‘not up to Apple’s standards.’ The e-mail, seen by Ars Technica, acknowledges MobileMe’s flaws and what could have been done to better handle the launch. In addition to needing more time and testing, Jobs believes that Apple should have rolled MobileMe’s services out slowly instead of launching it ‘as a monolithic service.’ For example, over-the-air iPhone syncing could have gone up initially, then web apps one by one (Mail, Calendar, etc.),” Jacqui Cheng reports for Ars Technica.

“Jobs goes on. ‘It was a mistake to launch MobileMe at the same time as iPhone 3G, iPhone 2.0 software and the App Store,’ he says. ‘We all had more than enough to do, and MobileMe could have been delayed without consequence,'” Cheng reports.

Slash Lane reports for AppleInsider, “The Apple co-founder also announced changes to the company’s management structure that will see Eddy Cue, formally vice president of iTunes, oversee all Internet-related services, including the iTunes, the App Store, and Mobile Me. Cue will now report directly to Jobs.”

“‘The MobileMe launch clearly demonstrates that we have more to learn about Internet services,’ Jobs told employees. ‘And learn we will. The vision of MobileMe is both exciting and ambitious, and we will press on to make it a service we are all proud of by the end of this year,'” Lane reports.

Jobs states the obvious. Let’s hope Apple learns from this going forward. Users of Apple products expect and deserve better. Also, there are quite enough detractors out there conjuring up Apple “problems.” To hand them a real one – one that could easily have been avoided, no less – was a mistake.

  1. DLMeyer… That’s Trekker.

The MobileMe launch was one of the few missteps in Jobs second tenure. You can bet they’ll take a more methodical approach in future.

Actually, Apple did issue a public apology and 30 days of ‘free” MobileMe service. It was a good PR move, but still of little consolation to people who were expecting it to “just work”.

Given MobileMe’s dicey .Mac DNA, I would have waited at least a couple of months before trying to use it.

  2. “Apple Users are just used to actually getting it.”

Repeatedly, Roughly, from behind with every botched product introduction.

If Rev A hardware from other vendors had as many problems as Apple does, they’d be out of business. Fortunately Apple has the fanboy base to repeatedly buy those Rev A products, find the defects and let Apple fix them for the next group of customers, all the time convincing themselves Apple is doing a great job.

  3. “And who said that MDN was blatantly slavish in their devotion to all things Apple?”

    ——————–

They are blatantly slavish in defending and/or agreeing with all things Apple.. When Apple apologizes or admits a mistake, do you really think MDN would disagree? Of course not..

I don’t normally correct grammar in postings, in fact I didn’t do it above. I am just bored with the pretentious use of “fanboi”, like that is so clever. If someone wants to call me a fanboy, as if it is some sort of insult, go ahead. Just spell the damn word normally.

  5. “You mean, like Microsoft’s Xbox 360?”

Exactly like XBox 360. That was bad enough for Microsoft, but would have killed a company for who it was their main product.

But somehow Apple struggles on with crashing and non functional online services, discoloring, whining overheating crashing Macs, cracking iPhones which can’t be activated or upgraded and the fanboys think they’re doing a great job.

You keep getting shafted, but you keep coming back. You must enjoy being Apple’s bitch.

  6. “You keep getting shafted, but you keep coming back. You must enjoy being Apple’s bitch.”

Look who keeps coming back for more. This little punk doesn’t realize that he is our bitch! You belong to MDN moron. Your candy ass has been passed around more than a two dollar whore.

  7. I think that you are correct. They really should have just teamed up with Google and let Google handle the cloud computing. The expertise of Google is really there. Unless there is some discrepancy between Android and iPhone, as in conflict of interest, I agree wholeheartedly that Google should have been hooked up to .mac or mobileMe.
