“The beta release of the iPhone 2.1 firmware turned up GPS and push e-mail hints, and some further exploration has uncovered even more juicy tidbits. iPhone Atlas has the details of one such discovery: a reference to what could be an upcoming iPod touch revision,” Justin Berka reports for Ars Technica.
“In this case, the excitement is related to references to an ‘iPod2,1’ model that have been discovered in the 2.1 beta release. As you may know, Apple attaches a model identifier string (‘MacBook3,1,’ for example) to each product line, which generally changes when significant updates are made to a particular product,” Berka reports.
“These strings tend to show up in firmware releases, since they help tell the firmware which devices to support and also end up being fairly reliable indicators of upcoming models,” Berka reports.
