“I’ve spent part of the weekend downloading and trying out dozens of the more than 800 new third-party iPhone applications that launched with the debut of Apple’s “App store.” The store is part of the new iPhone 2.0 operating system, which not only comes with the new iPhone 3G, but is also a free upgrade on older iPhones and a $10 upgrade on the iPod touch,” Walt Mossberg blogs on AllThingsD.
“These first applications range from serious programs for doctors and pilots to silly parlor tricks that take advantage of the iPhone’s motion sensors. One, called PhoneSaber, merely displays an image of a Star Wars-like light saber and makes varying light saber noises as you wave the phone in the air,” Mobberg writes.

We’ve found that Shazam and/or Midomi (both free apps) are real head-turners when showing off our new iPhone 3Gs. Both are music discovery programs that “listen” to music and determine the artsits and name of the song. Midomi also lets you sing or hum a song to find out what it is (it’d clean up on Name That Tune) along with other options.
So, there are 800 apps now?
If apple just released iPhone in 20 countries and the servers went down, what will happen in a few moths that they are going to release it on 58 more countries? and with more than thousand apps?

I read somewhere that AIM uses an SMS message for each comment. Is that true? That could cost a fortune if one does not have unlimited SMS. I can’t remember where I read it but it is keeping me from trying AIM.

Those countries won’t be launching simultaneously so there shouldn’t be any problems with the servers.

That is definitely not true. Perhaps you misunderstood that AIM can also send SMS messages directly to cell phones in addition to sending IMs to other AIM clients.

Gizmodo also mentions an app called DataCase, which is supposed to be available July 28 for $7. According to the writers, it’s supposed to turn an iPhone or iPod touch into a “handheld wireless drive.”
They say, “DataCase uses Bonjour in the same manner as Air Disk, meaning the iPhone or iPod touch drive will automatically appear in a Mac’s finder. Once you have files on the iPhone, you can browse, view and delete them.”
Gizmodo reports, “Since the app works with any ‘wireless capable computer,’ PCs and Linux are also supported.”

Walt is the biggest Mac ad out there, along with Rush, Jason Long and David Pogue. However, in this age of snappy video clips he does take 7 minutes to convey 1 minute of information.
Just be patient and watch the video over lunch and it won’t be so bad.
