“Apple may launch its iPhone App Store Thursday, according to three people who have been briefed on the matter,” Mary Jane Irwin reports for Forbes.
“The online store will open at noon, Eastern Time, Thursday, to coincide with when the iPhone goes on sale in New Zealand, according to one source,” Irwin reports.
“Historically secretive Apple did not return calls about the Apps store. Details about the size, scope or content of the store are consequently scarce,” Irwin reports.

Three whole people eh? Oh well, hope it’s true.

Any chance of a universal landscape keyboard app or are we strictly at the whim of Apple on that one?
Umm no, the iPhone goes on sale in New Zealand at midnight local time, which is 8am ET tomorrow morning. So this report is totally bogus.
The report is wrong. New Zealand is 16 hours ahead of New York, not 12 hours.
You can already use landscape keyboard in some instances. While viewing safari in landscape mode, hit the web address field. A landscape keyboard comes up. I don’t see what the big difference is since I have no problem with it in the other mode.
@@R2–
A landscape keyboard would be much more efficient for SMS messaging, which hopefully will be trumped by an iChat application upon the launch of the new app store. I am also hopeful that this app will come with the landscape keyboard.
They demoed iChat previously, so I think it’s a given that it’s coming.
What’s the point in opening the store early for NZ anyway??? It’s so over priced no one down here is gonna buy one anyway!
Sorry Apple – you want people down here to really be able to use software in NZ on the iPhone? Well… sort out Vodafone NZ first!! We can’t afford their (pathetic from 250mb-1Gg) data plans for a start, let alone thinking about the App’s…
It’ll (may) be US$10 approx for an app , but add on $5 for data usage!(10mb)
Good luck…
urm, I’m reading the NYTimes. The first sentence is my “three people”

@R2
It’s much easier to type an email response, SMS or other message in landscape format. The iPhone is easier to hold and I can type with both of my thumbs.
I don’t mind typing in portrait mode either, but for longer emails, landscape mode is much easier.
Okay, 9am PST Thu is 4am Fri in NZ.
1pm PST Thu (4pm EST) is when the new iPhone goes on sale in the first location (NZ).

Download the app via your PC/Mac then sync across to avoid any download quota costs via the cell network, plus its faster.
After over a year of using my iPhone extensively, I find the keyboard much easier to use in portrait mode than landscape mode. The distance between the keys in landscape mode actually slows me down.
I am hoping this means that the iPhone 2.0 software is available as well. I would like to try it out before finalizing my decision on whether to upgrade to the 3G iPhone or stick with iPhone Classic for now.
FYI,
the App Store is already online! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” /> I just DL’ed AIM, Facebook, Mobile News Network and MySpace (all free apps), and I don’t even have my iPhone yet!
