The best place to buy your new iPhone 3G, Apple or AT&T?

“When the iPhone 3G hits July 11th, it will be available at both AT&T and Apple stores,” Mark Wilson writes for Gizmodo.

Wilson asks, “So beyond a little extra pretentiousness at the Apple stores, is there anything different between them? What if you need to start a new plan? What if you need to transfer a number? Can Apple handle the complicated stuff?”

“Actually, AT&T has told us that there will be no limiting difference between the two stores, except one thing,” Wilson explains. “If you are a business or enterprise customer, then you should buy your iPhone from AT&T.”

  1. Screw AT&T;. Still didn’t get my deposit back when I cancelled and paid off the early termination fee.

Again, AT&T;is just the old Cingular in new clothing.

Warning! Don’t cancel early and expect a seamless process.

They make you call, then beg your ass off and then wait a few months before you can settle up with them.

Get a T****phone. $30 for the phone and a mere $10-20 every few months for minutes.

    I’m in HEAVEN!!

  2. Right… pretentiousness is the only thing that makes an Apple store different from an AT&T;store. OK, then better avoid all that pretentious high tech and go to AT&T;.

PS, what exactly is Apple “pretending”? That’s the root of the word pretentious. Are they pretending something they are not?

  3. If you are new to ATT then buy your phone from Apple. I believe Apple gets an additional payment if a new customer or phone line is added.

The more money Apple makes the more they can spend on R&D;to develop the next generation of iPhones or other cool gadgets!!

  4. Actually, since the new phone will qualify for what AT&T;calls IRU discounts, if your workplace offers an AT&T;discount, you should go to the AT&T;store, they’ll be able to set you up with the discounted plan and sell you the iPhone in one shot. Most government employees get 15% off, and colleges will often have discounts for employees and students.

  5. The reason I think this stinks stems from the fact that I am already an AT&T;customer. Why should I have to get a new plan just because I want a new phone to call someone? Can anyone say monopoly? I’ll wait until the new iPhones are hacked.

    mdn magic word: enough

  6. Answer: NEITHER!

At $70.00 a month with NO SMS service, I’m going to wait ’til it’s cheaper. That is just too much money for me.

No doubt others will jump at the chance, which is great, since I own some AAPL.

If you have read all the recent articles as of late you will remember that AT&T;has said that in the future they will offer phones without contracts at a price of around 499 for the 8gb. One can only be lead to believe that the contract activation or renewal will not take place in the Apple Store. So if that is right either the phone will be 199 in the Apple store or 499 at AT&T;. Hmmmmm tough choice wouldn’t you say?

I came out of the Cellular One merger into the mess called AT&T;and have a contract whose origin is still being honored with pricing that puts to shame what I would get if I renewed under AT&T;. Who cares about 3g access? It is a phone with a lot of other nice features.
