Analyst: iPod touch in shorter supply, changes expected by September

“In a report to clients Tuesday, Lehman Brothers analyst Ben Reitzes observes that the 8GB iPod touch is now showing a small but significant delay of 1-2 business days for orders made from Apple’s online store, while chain retailer Best Buy has seen reduced supplies of 16GB models at its own locations,” Aidan Malley reports for AppleInsider.

“‘We believe Apple will need to reposition the iPod touch product by September now that the iPhone acquisition price is lower,’ he says in the report. ‘We expect the iPod touch to experience significant cannibalization from lower-priced iPhones,'” Malley reports.

“No matter its origin, the supply pinch is said to be further evidence that Apple’s wider iPod sales are faring better than expected,” Malley reports.

  1. I would love an external speaker, on the iPod touch, so when I play games, on the 2.0 software, I can hear the games sounds, without having to use the headphones.

Anyone have Steve Jobs email address, so I can email him and ask him to release iPod touch’s with external speakers. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”cheese” style=”border:0;” />

I wasn’t bothered about GPS in the iPod touch, but after seeing it demonstrated on the iPhone 3G, it would be nice to have it in the touch, but it’s not a necessary.

  2. “And the “Free with Rebate” for an up to $299 iPod scheme going on from now until September for college students and staff in the US will only make the situation worse. ($299 is the lowest priced Touch)”

That is precisely the reason that this situation exists, and Apple has used these back to school bundles several times to clear out iPod inventory ahead of new product releases.

  3. I-Pod sales faring better than expected? Hardly. The POS I-Pod Touch and the rest of the I-Pod line will soon be discontinued. Apple has come to their senses and has licensed Zune from Microsoft. Watch for the announcement in the next few weeks. Once again Micorosoft wins, Apple loses. Are you MAC sheep getting tired of the same old story? I hear converting the I-Tunes store to Zune Marketplace will be quite a technical hurdle, but Microsoft engineers are on their way to Cupertino to make sure Apple doesn’t screw it up.

  4. The iPod Touch NEEDS external volume controls, speaker, and a clicker on the earbuds like the iPhone. I have an iPhone and can’t imagine being without them.

At least make the iPod Touch compatible with the pause clicker if owners chose to go out and buy their own. In fact, ALL future iPods should be compatible with the pause clicker.

I would encourage all people who stand next to JAYGEE to write into Apple and tell them not to do this. Really, the last thing we need to hear while standing in line with you is your iPhone playing game music accompanied by various beep and boops.

  6. Maybe we’ve put this issue to bed by now, but to answer the question, “who’d want an iTouch now that iPhones, are so cheap?” I’ll say all of those people who like the idea of a really portable hand-held computer but don’t want or need a minimum of a $70+ phone bill every month, plus those features on an iPhone stop working if you drop your phone plan.

  7. I want and iPod Touch and I’m aiming towards the 16GB. Though if Apple lowers the prices I might even go for the 32GB model. Im quite pleased with my current cellphone and I dont call that much. I dont have a nano laptop though and to me the Touch is that, plus I just love the touchscreen.
