Nuance Communications, a leading provider of speech solutions, today unveiled a prototype for voice search capabilities shown on the Apple iPhone.
The newly designed application introduces a new, more compelling consumer and search experience. Through Nuance speech recognition servers, mobile consumers – with no training required – can simply speak requests into their phone like “Find the Apple store in Boston, Massachusetts,” “Score of the Boston Celtics game,” or “Play Hannah Montana Best of Both Worlds” to quickly and accurately search the mobile web or in the future dictate an IM, SMS or e-mail message.
The prototype, code-named “OVS” for open voice search, will allow mobile operators to offer simple ‘say anything’ search capabilities and is search engine agnostic, able to link to any search engine of an operator’s choosing.
A video demonstration of the new application can be found at www.nuance.com/mobilesuite.

Personally, I’d rather request, “find photographs of Jennifer Garner” and “Get me the scores in the English Premier League”…
First post… hi hi hi…
Does that thing recognize chinese talk???
“Score of the Boston Celtics game,” or “Play Hannah Montana Best of Both Worlds”
Or play Boston and score Hannah Montana . . tickets.
Iiiiirrrrrgghhh HueyLong beat me…
For Mac+, How about “Write first post”. For Ampar how about “Insert double entendre here” or “Settle lawsuit w/ Miley Ray Cyrus’s lawyer”.
And of COURSE for HMCIV’s boss, “Stop wasting time @ work”.
How about voice activated calling via Bluetooth?
I’d like to be engaged in a legal activity when using my phone in my car, thankyouverymuch!
How about “how to kill your battery by keeping your mic active all the time and processing background noise as possible commands” or “how to filter voices of idiots who stand behind me screaming “dial 911, dial 911, dial 1 555 BIG JUGS””
“”how to kill your battery by keeping your mic active all the time and processing background noise as possible commands”

Battery or not, Apple needs to address this..
It is currently illegal to use a handheld phone in the state of California while driving..
Voice calling seems to be the only solution..
This would require special support by Apple to work. iPhone applications normally cannot control other applications.
I could see Apple to make an exception there, but the developers can’t do it on their own on a non-jailbroken iPhone.
Thats the true power of the iPhone. That is OSX and SDK. So you people complaining about a 2MP camera can go jump in the lake. ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />
My 3+ year Moto V710 has voice dialing that works great! The iPhone should have this out of the box. Come on Apple!! Give us Voice Dialing from Apple!!! or License it from Moto.
“or License it from Moto.”
I doubt whether Greg Brown would return Steve’s call. Their relationship must be razr thin by now.
I used to have also voice dialing in my very old samsumg, but that was just for “voice dialing” and it has some problems.
This new tech from Nuance Communications is for “voice commands”, the big difference here is that with voice dialing, you press a button in the phone and then you speak the “Dial Who” command, the phone only expects to speak something and compare it with a database and dial a number, that is very simple.
Nuance’s system actually tries to “understand” what do you want. If you want to open an application, or if you want to search for a address, of if you want to dial a number or what ever. See the difference?
I don’t know about you guys, but i always felt weird saying (repeating? They never work the first time) things like “Home”, “Amy’s Mobile”, etc. into my old Razr. Almost always ended up saying “Home! Home! Home! Home!”. Always got funny stares when doing it in public! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”grin” style=”border:0;” />
I’m talking about using voice dialing with a bluetooth ear phone and not touching the iPhone. Right now I just touch a button on my Jaba bluetooth ear phone and make a call, the voice dialing in my Moto V710 works great, almost nerve have to repeat a name. You know “Hands Free”!!
@Macdoc
Do you have more than one number per person though? That is where I usually have an issue. I was say call joe and joe has 3 numbers so I say call cell and it asks if I want work or home. Eventually I get it or I just press dial.
I use Nuance frequently on my Palm Centro to compose SMS text messages.
You say
SMS [recipient’s name] Body [speak your text]
You can also do email similarly, but you say Email, of course, and add a subject line.
It takes awhile, depending on your connection speed, but the software actually “writes” the text for you.
