Rogers and Apple to bring iPhone 3G to Canada on July 11

Rogers Communications and Apple today announced that the highly anticipated iPhone 3G will be available in Canada on July 11. iPhone 3G combines all the revolutionary features of iPhone with 3G networking that is twice as fast* as the first generation iPhone, built-in GPS for expanded location based mobile services, and iPhone 2.0 software which includes support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and runs the hundreds of third party applications already built with the recently released iPhone SDK.

“Rogers has a long history of bringing Canadians the very best in wireless services, networks and handset innovations,” said Rob Bruce, president, Rogers Wireless, in the press release. “With iPhone 3G, we will provide our customers with an amazing mobile experience over Canada’s fastest wireless network.”

“We’re excited to be working with Rogers to bring iPhone 3G to Canada,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s COO. “We can’t wait to get this revolutionary phone in the hands of even more people around the world.”

iPhone 3G will operate on Rogers’ High Speed Packet Access (HSPA) wireless network, the fastest mobile network in Canada. HSPA is nationally available in the top Canadian urban centers from Vancouver to Halifax, covering more than 60 percent of the population. iPhone 3G will also operate on Roger’s coast-to-coast GSM/EDGE network, proven to be the country’s most reliable wireless network. More details on pricing and retail availability will be available soon.

  1. I just called Rogers to try to pre-book an iPhone, but they had only just heard about it.
As a high paying business user, I get an iPhone for around $99! (long term contract, hardware upgrade)
Still have to wait to find out what outrageous fees Rogers will be charging….
Now I have to sell my 16gb on CraigsList.

  2. “I just called Rogers to try to pre-book an iPhone, but they had only just heard about it.”

I find this outrageous. And probably not true. Their website, which Apple has a link to, has absolustely no information about the iPhone. They’ve had several months at least to get going and now they have just over a month to get it all up and running.

Their website rarely works well with Macs and I expect major problems with the iPhone as well. Luckily apple seems to be taking on a major part of the back-end server stuff to support the phone.

Fortunately, I’ll be away in July and can’t get one for 26 days after launch. Perhaps by then Teb Rogers and his minions will have the bugs worked out!

  3. Well, it’s about time!!

I just have to resolve myself to continue to pay for a Telus service for another 15 months that I will not use.

I once heard of a service where you could sell your unused contract for a discounted amount. Does anyone know about this??

  4. Rogers is so stupid, that they can’t even get Search working properly for their web site. If you go to rogers.com, and enter iPhone in the search field at the top, you get ZERO hits. But you go to google, and do a site-search on rogers.com of iPhone, you get 4 hits, 2 of which are Rogers PR’s… They are dumb as posts when it comes to technology.

  5. And from their [Rogers] press release today: “iPhone 3G will sell for $199 for the 8Gb model and $299 for the 16Gb model, on a three-year plan. More details on price plans and retail availability will be available soon.”

  6. Sometimes you can sell your mobile and phone on messageboards with international students. They’re here for a year and are trying to save money. Give them $100 and they’ll take it off your hands for the duration of the contract.

  7. I cannot believe it, but it appears Rogers was blindsided by this release of the iPhone 3G. Surely they could’ve done something to prepare for the link coming from apple.ca.

As much as I want I an iPhone after today’s announcement, I cannot overlook my hatred towards Rogers.

  8. I can’t believe that Rogers is any worse than Bell, or Telus. I suspect that like most of the large Canadian industries, they collude with each other. ‘Course that could just be my own cynicism coupled with a healthy dose of paranoia! ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”wink” style=”border:0;” />

  9. @Swing Geezer: I definitely agree about collusion. I am sure it’s the primary reason why we still have a “system access” charge on our cell phone bills and the fact that none of the rate plan pricing between companies is much different. It truly is a sad state of affairs in the Canadian cell phone industry.

  10. Well as much as Rogers has screwed with my email for the last month and a half I will still be buying an iPhone in Canada. Business is business.

But It’s is no coincidence that the email suddenly started working properly last week after ragging on them many times to get them to fix it, “Sorry sir this is an system wide Apple issue”
    You guys SUCK

  11. YOYOY, do Canadians put up with collusion?

Because, what are ya gonna do?

What till they raise income tax to 98%, There’ll be a fscking revolution.

Which is Canadian for: We’ll bitch for half the day, then buy whatever — at 10pm. When no one else can see our sorry asses, skulking in shadows.

  12. Do you all remember when Arco came to Canada? They sold gas for 39¢/liter, while everyone else sold it for 59¢.

Well, the ‘competition’ lasted for about four months.

Arco realized that there was no point in competing. They packed their tents, and headed back to California.

  13. Does Roger seriously think that I’m dumb enough to believe that my internet connection uses any where near the bandwidth that even 1/3 of the channels that I actually watch use.

    Fscknuts. Data is data.

    You are raping us.

    Please stop.

  14. You just called Rogers to try to pre-book an iPhone, but they had only ‘just heard’ about it?

Rogers couldn’t find their ass, with both hands — with help from Monica Lewinsky; Margaret Trudeau; and Mila Mulroney — in a map store dedicated to ass maps.

  15. …They announced the $199 price point everywhere, it will be interesting to see how Rogers manage to move that one up…

Actually, Rogers is going to use Rogers’ Hipster Points.

The iPhone — in Canada— will infact be, 199 Rogers Hipster points.

You can buy one [1] Rogers Hipster point with your Rogers [32% interest per annum] Rogers Visa Card for $1.20 CDN, plus GST.

  16. …Rogers was blindsided by this release of the iPhone 3G…

    Blindsided?

How could the alleged ‘premier cellphone provider’ not know about ‘every’ popular cell phone in the entire existence of humanity?

Because Rogers doesn’t care about trivial matters such as ‘what the customer wants, and can afford’.

  17. It hit me like a ton of Oolichans.

Apple helped the ingrateful Rogers — a Windows preferential company — fix their ‘internet’ problems.

Wow! No wonder Canadians are upset with Apple.

We’re gonna have to unlearn MS’s twice-convicted, illegal monopoly, internet ‘standards’.

  18. Rogers Wireless has a press release here:
    http://your.rogers.com/investorrelations/news_wireless.asp

    it confirms:

    $199 for 8GB, $299 for 16GB – with a 3 year contract.

so I assume that means C$199/C$299

as of late today 6/09, there seems to be no other mention of iPhone 3G on Rogers website, except on the front page of rogers.com/wireless there’s a small teaser add that says:

“Something really big is coming July 11th
    – from Canada’s most reliable wireless network”
    There’s a mysterious black monolith-like shadow of a phone for a picture.

if you click on the link, it reloads the main page. So they’re probably not ready yet with the iPhone specific page. keep an eye out…

  19. I am disappointed that you cannot purchase or order the iPhone through the AppleStore.
Rogers will turn a good product with a good user experience into a pain in the a$$ at every touchpoint.

Aside from the outrageous charges and screwups, for which they are famous, the culture at Rogers is that the customer is to be treated with contempt.
After all, the customer is ALLOWED by Rogers to have the PRIVILEGE of using the services Rogers graciously makes available.
