AT&T and Apple today announced that the innovative iPhone 3G will be available in the US on July 11. iPhone 3G combines all the revolutionary features of iPhone with 3G networking that is twice as fast as the first generation iPhone, built-in GPS for expanded location based mobile services, and iPhone 2.0 software which includes support for Microsoft Exchange ActiveSync and runs the hundreds of third party applications already built with the recently released iPhone SDK.
“We’re offering the most advanced mobile device ever on the nation’s most advanced high speed network,” said Ralph de la Vega, president and CEO, AT&T Mobility, in the press release. “We think iPhone 3G is an amazing mobile device and our customers are going to love using iPhone 3G to make calls, send emails and surf the web even faster.”
“We’re thrilled to continue working with the largest wireless carrier in the US to bring iPhone 3G to AT&T customers this July,” said Tim Cook, Apple’s COO, in the press release. “iPhone 3G is a revolutionary product and we can’t wait for customers to get their hands on it.”
AT&T’s broad and powerful 3G mobile broadband network offers 3G mobile phones download speeds of up to 1.4 Mbps. AT&T’s 3G network is currently available in more than 275 leading US metropolitan areas and by year-end, the company plans to offer 3G service in nearly 350 metropolitan areas. AT&T has the best global coverage of any provider with roaming available in more than 200 countries, including more 3G roaming than any other carrier.
iPhone 3G will be available in the US on July 11 for a retail price of US$199 for the 8GB model and $299 for the 16GB model in both Apple and AT&T’s retail stores and requires a new two year contract. AT&T will also sell iPhone 3G through its direct business sales teams.
What is “assisted GPS”? That is what Apple calls it. Is this some form of GPS lite or something like that? Does the iPhone have real GPS?
Actually, its more like GPS+
It will use any signal (GPS, cell or wi-fi) to position you as quickly as possible.
it will use the assistance of wireless towers triangulating your position first before the satellite locates your exact location within the triangulated area.

Far superiour to ordinary, simple GPS. It should find position faster, more accurately and using less power. Neat!
A-GPS main advantage is it works indoors most places. Also works on city streets where satellites are not visible because of tall buildings.
Really, how hard is it to make the landscape keyboard available for text, e-mail and Notes? I mean is this some type of major software task? It seemed like a pretty simple idea to me.
What they didn’t tell you at the keynote is that the monthly rates are going up $10/month… according to ZDNet. That sucks.

OK, so what’s Apple been shipping and delivering to all the stores recently? It wouldn’t really be 3G iPhone stock to sit around for another month, would it?
So HEY…
What was in all those Australian Mystery Boxes that so many people were defending the validity of…?
Hello?
Bueller?

{tumbleweeds]
@R2
I’m sure it’s pretty simple, but hey.. it may be at the top of your list of things for apple to do, but evidently it was not on the top of their list.
Personally.. I think cut-and-paste should be the next major thing for them add.
@C1
I dunno, but guessing by all of the big smiles in Austrailia today, it must have been really good.
“What was in all those Australian Mystery Boxes . . .?
It was just a Roo’s.
cut and paste and mms support… lets catch up to other smart phones then come up with new arguably useful features
@ Ampar
[ouch!]
Yes $10 more a month for 3G so tht is $240 over contract and they discount phone by $200–so $1.69 more per month by my calculation.
A lot less iPhone than I was hoping for, but a step up nonetheless.
So, iPhone 2.0 will not be available at the Apple store on-line, only in retail stores? Apple store has a link for finding stores and does not include pricing. Usually when a new product is introduced, it is available for pre-order right away. My closest Apple Store is 5-hours by car, and I will not step into an AT & T store.
Would also like to add that I don’t really care for the idea of paying $10 more to use 3G when I don’t get 3G service in my area, only Edge. So a $120/year payment for the privilege of using 3G when I travel to select locations. Yuck!
Thank you guys for that info about assisted GPS, sounds great.
About the $10 increase. Let’s not jump the gun here. The extra fee for the iPhone (unlimited data) has always been $30. It was $20 for current AT&T;customers who switched to the iPhone. I would think that when we buy the new phone we might be able to keep our same rates and just extend our contract to 2 years.
One person posts a rumor, and other speak of it like it’s a fact.
Talk about Pavlov’s doggies.
@Ampar.
A roo in a box would be like a jack in the box when opened.
Boing!!!
@Greg M,
Uh, no, it was not just for current AT&T;customers… Both my wife and I were never previosuly AT&T;(or Cingular) customers before, and we both only pay $20 for data. I know three other people who never were AT%T/Cingular customers, and they too all pay $20 for data… Stop making stuff up.
“Boing!!!”
There’s your mini-tower.

My data charge is also $20 a month and I was never an AT&T;customer.
The article also states that the new phone would require a NEW 2 year contract.
Doesn’t sound as though you can just get a new phone and continue on with your old contract.
Just noticed that it requires iTunes 7.7 for both Mac and PC. Looks like an update coming…
