Apple’s iPhone 2.0 to offer geo-tagging of photos

“If you’ve taken lots of camera photos with your iPhone and later wondered where they were taken, the new iPhone software could solve that problem. According to news reports, the iPhone Software 2.0 update will offer location-based photo-tagging which the user can turn on and off,” Barry Levine reports for NewsFactor.

“Geo-tagging adds location data to a photo or other media, often using a mobile device’s Global Positioning System (GPS) function. GPS is not in the current iPhone, but it is expected to be part of an upcoming 3G iPhone. However, the current iPhone can approximate a user’s location by triangulating with cell phone towers,” Levine reports.

“The updated software will ask a user, after taking a picture, if they want it tagged with the geographical location. The software update is not scheduled to be released to iPhone owners until June, but it has reportedly been released already to enterprise partners, and geo-tagging is among the new features. The 2.0 firmware is scheduled to be released at the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) in San Francisco in early June,” Levine reports.

  1. Geo-tagging of photos on an I-Phone. Whatever. How about junking that POS so-called operating system on the I-Phone and licensing Windows Mobile? Then Apple might have something.

    Your potential. Our passion.™

  2. I think people are missing the real point of this feature. It’s not about wondering where you took a photo…

It’s about being able to organize your photos in iPhoto by location.

Another step towards automatic photo organization, which is a pain in the ass (even though doing it by date is somewhat helpful now).

  3. I’ve got the iphone and I am OK with edge since most of the I’m near wi-fi anyways. I don’t really care about 3g. I’d probably turn it off to save on battery life.

I will however buy the next iphone if it has true GPS. If it doesn’t then I’ll stick with what I have.

What ever happened to the Leopard update? I guess Apple decided to add something into the update to stop the clones. It’s a shame that we have to wait for the update because of that. I want to be able to use my DVI monitor again with my Macbook Pro!!!!! This is absurd that we’ve had to wait this long for a fix.
