Report: Apple iPhone in Canada coming in June with Rogers’ $7 per month data plan

“The Canadian iPhone is set to be launched in June and will potentially have the least expensive data plan of any carrier announced to date,” Electronista reports.

“Sources from inside Rogers claim that the device should be available the same month as an expected US release of an updated, 3G-capable model rather than as part of any possible staggered launch,” Electronista reports.

“The sources claim that the iPhone will qualify for Rogers’ $7 on-device browsing plan, which currently allows all phones offered by Rogers (excepting BlackBerry and Windows Mobile devices) to access the web as much as they like through the carrier’s officially-sanctioned browser,” Electronista reports.

  1. How do carriers get away with giving the iPhone these exclusive data rates? Shouldn’t RIM, Palm, Microsoft etc. be upset that their smartphones still require those awful PDA plans?

  2. @ R2

Its about market penetration and sales. People don’t stand in lines to get Windoz, Palm, or RIM phones. The iPhone has the potential of bringing more people into their network. So, they are willing to sweeten the deal to get the biggest bang for the buck (a Canadian buck of course). That’s assuming there is any truth to these rumors.

(Actually, I will be standing in a line to get RID of my Palm piece of junk just as soon as my contract with Verizon is up).

MDN Magic Word “friends” as in, friends don’t let friends buy Palm junk.

  3. Ooops! Sorry, we made a mathematical Boo-Boo. The article should have read $700/month for internet access … but only $7 of that defined as a fee for “browsing”. I mean, what is “browsing” anyway? Once you get past the search field you are no longer “browsing” and are in fact a “downloader” and therefore must PAY! (Rubbing hands greedily)

  4. OK, mark your calenders, there is NO way you will see a plan comparable to AT&T;here in Canada (minutes + data + vmail + etc + taxes) for.. my guess $85 – $99.

    mw: with
even ‘with’ all the hype were still going to get ripped off again.

  5. Yeah, if you actually read the terms for the $7/month off, it pretty much makes a total mockery of the word “unlimited”. It’s more like you can access Roger’s unwalled garden as much as you want [only using Rogers sanctioned web browser], and if you happen to step outside the boundary, you get charged a crazy data rate. And they don’t tell you what the boundaries of the garden are.

  6. I currently pay $20 for Rogers’ “Communicate” package, which gives unlimited data using their own (crappy!) browser on my Nokia phone. So unusable that I never ever use it!

My girlfriend is paying $11 for the same Communicate package. Not sure why hers is near half the price.

  7. I currently have the Rogers Communicate package, and use it on my unlocked iPhone with no overage charges. Don’t tell Rogers though ” width=”19″ height=”19″ alt=”smile” style=”border:0;” />

  8. I have an iPhone in Canada on Rogers. (they think its the crappy razr they gave me)
    I pay:

$165 a month for 1000 minutes, voice mail, text etc.
    $80 a month for 500mb of data.
    Plus various fees, taxes, etc.

My monthly bill is usually about $300 CAD. Thats about $303 USD.

I am hoping for a $150 a month 1000 minute plan with unlimited data for email and web.

I actually use about 40mb per month – been doing this for 4 months now – thats soccer scores, craigslist, news, google maps, stocks , email, sending a few pics by e,mail etc etc.

Rogers charging $7 a month? – never going to happen.

  9. I’m very excited to hear that the iPhone is finally being released in Canada. Congratulations! Perhaps all of those Apple/Rogers negotiations will have paid off. I hope that Rogers will do the right thing by its customers and give them a good deal. Best of luck, you guys.
